FTSE + FTSE 250 - consider trading (FTSE)

cynic - 20 Oct 2007 12:12

rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.

for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ

for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

cynic - 08 Mar 2017 07:57 - 21284 of 21973

DOW + DAX
the target prices for all my Dow and 50% of my Dax shorts was hit o'night, at about the current levels ..... these are a fraction above potential support levels

cynic - 09 Mar 2017 08:32 - 21285 of 21973

DAX
11,900 is now in view if not yet under threat
if that gives way, then there could be quite a bit further to drop

cynic - 10 Mar 2017 13:36 - 21286 of 21973

NFPs
The figures also validate recent comments by Federal Reserve officials that flagged a likely interest-rate increase this month

slightly strangely, the DOW doesn't seem to care and continues north

Stan - 10 Mar 2017 13:56 - 21287 of 21973

Is cid1 one to give Dow futures?

cynic - 10 Mar 2017 14:04 - 21288 of 21973

who or what is cid1?

Stan - 10 Mar 2017 14:12 - 21289 of 21973

iShares DJ Industrial Average UCITS Etf Share Price (CID1)

cynic - 10 Mar 2017 14:54 - 21290 of 21973

never heard of it ..... i use IG

Stan - 10 Mar 2017 15:08 - 21291 of 21973

Can I get Dow futures without being a member?

cynic - 10 Mar 2017 15:27 - 21292 of 21973

i don't know, but probably by running a demo a/c you could
try

Stan - 10 Mar 2017 15:28 - 21293 of 21973

I Thank you.

cynic - 10 Mar 2017 16:04 - 21294 of 21973

almost tempted to short Dow again, albeit that it has already dropped 100+ from its earlier high
Dax is another tempter, especially if 11,900 gets attacked

cynic - 14 Mar 2017 14:45 - 21295 of 21973

DOW
heading sharply towards 20,775
break that, and there could indeed be further retrenchment
on the other hand, it may prove to be a support and thus a bounce likely

HARRYCAT - 15 Mar 2017 08:45 - 21296 of 21973

FOMC statement this evening plus results of the NL election....plus ex-divi day tomorrow (BATS the biggest I can see)...Thursday might be quite a volatile day.

Stan - 15 Mar 2017 23:06 - 21297 of 21973

The expected rate rise in the states confirmed tonight of a 1/4 of 1% to 1%

With the dollar down against the £ I'm hopeping for a rise in gold tomorrow.

HARRYCAT - 16 Mar 2017 08:06 - 21298 of 21973

Seems the Dutch have taken the safer route in their elections, rejecting the far right candidate. I wonder if the french will do the same? JC Juncker must be breathing a sigh of relief.

cynic - 16 Mar 2017 10:19 - 21299 of 21973

always likely though wilders still holds 2nd largest number of seat
le pen will also not get near being elected

nevertheless, eu would be foolish to think that hostility to the brussels mafia on all sorts of issues, immigration being just one has remotely diminished, let alone gone away

HARRYCAT - 21 Mar 2017 18:24 - 21300 of 21973

DOW down over 200....what happened?

EDIT: Also S&P, Nasdaq & Russell. Seems nothing specific, but a myriad of small triggers. Gold has hit $1244 oz.

Stan - 21 Mar 2017 22:12 - 21301 of 21973

Is the honeymoon period between Wall Street and President Trump over?

The Dow fell by about 238 points Tuesday, a drop of more than 1%. It was its biggest slide of the year and biggest decline since the election. The broader S&P 500 was also down more than 1%.
Neither index had ended the day with a 1% drop since mid-October. This was their worst day since September.

HARRYCAT - 22 Mar 2017 06:21 - 21302 of 21973

Reuters - Asian stocks posted their biggest drop in two weeks on Wednesday as growing doubts about Donald Trump's economic growth agenda prompted investors to dump risky assets and rush to safe havens such as gold and government debt.

Equity markets across the region were a sea of red and the Australian dollar AUD=D3 nursed heavy losses as funds took profits from a two-week long rally, pushing a gauge of market volatility .VIX up to its highest levels this year.

Stock markets in Europe are set to take Asia's cues and open lower with key index futures pointing down after U.S. stocks .

DAX
i know i'm up very early today ..... watch out as indications are that DAX will open firmly below the important 11,950 support

alleged reason via FT ....
Markets hit by biggest fall since Trump election
Uncertainty over effort to revamp healthcare fuels concerns about pro-business agenda
