Antio Horta-Osio, the new chief executive of Lloyds Banking Group, has been handed a pay package worth up to 9.7m after just a month at the part-nationalised bank.

On top of his 1.06m salary, the Portuguese banker was given 4.1m in shares to buy him out of contracts with Santander, his previous employer, which he left at the end of last year to join Lloyds.
