This ones a heck of a specualive investment but it seems that the institutions are willing to stomp up the cash to back it in the long term.

MEDICAL MARKETING Joint Venture

We recently highlighted Medical Marketing (MMG) as worthy of attention. The company, in which I have a personal share holding, has this morning announced the formation of a joint venture, Genvax, to develop a novel DNA vaccine platform technology.

Human trials have been underway since 2001 in areas such as Lymphoma and Myeloma but the technology has broad applications in cancer, viral and bacterial infections (hence the term platform). The technology works on boosting the immune system by teaching it to identify hard to recognise cancer proteins as foreign and destroy them. Early results from the 25 patient trial in lymphoma are encouraging and evaluation of the result is expected by March 2005. Successful results should mean big pharmaceutical groups will start to take financial and commercial interests around that time.

This looks to be the first of a series of announcements due from Medical Marketing as it has a range of predominantly cancer trials moving into the clinical stage. (news flow could push the price higher)

The stock has made good progress in recent sessions up to the mid-80p level where the company is valued at just under 40 million. ENDS.

My contact from today's analyst meeting had the following observations :

Expectations of collaborations with major Pharma have taken several new steps forward :

* Genvax now in discussion with 9 of top 10 Pharma companies on collaboration and at "a very, very interesting phase" (DB). It may well be that the breadth of the DNA vaccine anti-cancer platform will permit several companies to take interests in specific cancer areas. Data on prostate trial are being shared with potential partners under confidentiality agreements - and what is more, several Pharma cos have audited Genvax's facilities/methodologies favourably, which would constitute a major prerequisite of any deal.

* Genvax's bespoke lymphoma PhI/PhII trial completed successfully. Unexpectedly, this therapy has attracted licensing interest from big Pharma (it was not thought to be a sufficiently large, or addressable, market) - but Pharma cos. with access to major networks of clinical facilities have expressed an interest in licensing the technology as interest in "proof of concept" of bespoke vaccines.

* A deal on partnering Oncosense (ruthenium) will be "earlier on the curve" than the original vision of post-PhII data timing. Several top 10 companies are interested - especially since the pathway to replace 30-year old platinum cancer drugs with ruthenium is well understood, with the in-vitro data so overwhelming on low toxicity and high efficacy - and DB said that an Oncosense tie-up would be likely to leapfrog a Genvax tie-up anticipated over the next 12 months, despite the fact that Q4 06 is start of PhI trials of the Ru compounds.

* Ribozyme anti-virals at very early stage, but interest is being shown from Big Pharma to get a seat at the table, despite clinical trial results being > 2 years away.

The point is that any collaborative deal with a major Pharma company will validate the MMG model and drive higher valuation of the equity - and permit MMG to drive tougher deals in future with the rest of the pipeline. So my contact does not expect a block-buster multi-million deal straight out of the blocks, but a smart deal that allows MMG to retain the maximum IP value, while exchanging vows on a limited therapeutic group of compounds.

In the meantime, the website will be upgraded to make it much more investor (rather than Lab Hotel)-friendly (ie pushing news alerts to subscribers etc), 2 new non-exec directors are being lined up from prominent UK Pharma companies, the 2005 AR will be published in the next 10 days and DB et al are touring journalists today and institutions tomorrow with the fresh contacts of Brunswick PR.

So there it is, guys, MMG bringing payday a little closer on all 3 fronts, but patience is still the key. DB expects news flow on Clinical data, Patents and agreements with Big Pharma to add sizzle to the vast potential outlined above - and all this adds up to a 90 million option (MMG's current market cap) on a three-platform therapeutic play on major disease areas.

At this price and at this stage of clinical development, MMG is a steal for serious investors, handicappers or share-jockeys alike.

Gene therapy frees men of cancer

"Two men have been cleared of deadly skin cancer using genetically modified versions of their own immune cells.
For Mark Origer, 53, the treatment destroyed his tumour, enabling him to attend his daughter's wedding.

The US National Cancer Institute team in Bethesda has also shown it can manipulate immune cells to attack breast, liver and lung cancers.

The modified T cells persisted in 15 other patients treated, but their malignant melanomas remained..........."

My point is that having made money shorting Medical Marketing (MMG) I am now on the long tack and the shares are heading my way yet again. there was something in the Telegraph today about gene thereapy.
