How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

watching the golf myself - amazed that when woods got within 4 shots he became favourite. in fairness to di marco hes playing superb though if he is anywhere around 2.0 starting the back nine tomorrow then ill be a layer - thats when the pressure really starts. its getting hard to see anyone else getting into it now

edit woods back within 4 and favourite again

bakko - 10 Apr 2005 00:26 - 2185 of 10502

Fundy

Have you noticed how the odds between them start to swing all over the show as soon as any of them hits a good or bad shot

Fundamentalist - 10 Apr 2005 00:57 - 2186 of 10502

The movement is way overdone - woods went from 3.9 to 3.1 for hitting it close on one hole - theres still 27 holes to go.

i see at the close of play they are both a shorter than they have been pretty much all day - the odds suggest a 2 horse race

Agree entirely about the unpredictability of the football at the moment. I think when there is an imbalance in the 'desire to win' stakes as you get towards the end of the season, it makes things difficult.

I didn't fancy Man Utd or Chelsea today on the basis that neither team really needed to win. Norwich on the other hand.....

anyone else finding betfair very slow this afternoon ?

chartist2004 - 10 Apr 2005 16:59 - 2189 of 10502

Fine here, on the horses bagged 18 from 18 so far this pm.....

Fundamentalist - 10 Apr 2005 17:34 - 2190 of 10502

been a very good day eh chartist - missed a couple of opportunities due to pc being slow at my end but a good day so far

bakko - 10 Apr 2005 17:49 - 2191 of 10502

Afternoon All,

Well done Chartist and Fundy. Hoping the success continues!

I get back to find that DiMarco has played poorly to my benefit having layed him off last night. Just greened up so can enjoy the final round tonight.

Scripophilist - 10 Apr 2005 18:09 - 2192 of 10502

Is this the season where Els blows up? I've noticed this pattern (Woods expected it appears) where you fly high for a few years then dissapear without a trace. I started laying Duval after he won the British Open. He is now ranked 574th in the world vs #2 back then.

personally dont think so but you never know

bakko
well done on di marco - the frustration of a tournament like this being on the beeb - so often you miss some of the crucial action - effectively Woods has won the tournament this afternoon yet we'll see about 5 mins highlights of it before they go live with him well in front.

anyone back real madrid - 2-0 up after 20 mins vs barcelona

Fundamentalist - 10 Apr 2005 18:29 - 2194 of 10502

make that 2-1 now

chartist2004 - 10 Apr 2005 18:31 - 2195 of 10502

Thanks guys, only one hit today from 23 bets Hex @ 17:10 Allegedly 1st but managed to 'red up'! for a reduced loss. Recovered my small loss on the Irish races Lim/Leop.
From 91 trades in the last 4 days only 4 losses (3 yesterday). Laying the 4th fav 2 mins from the start works for me (so far) I also back a few in running. I risk 16.6% of my total pot on each race, ok' that may seem very high, but of a success rate of 96.5% my pot is building at a fantastic rate. DYOR ...

Fundamentalist - 10 Apr 2005 19:39 - 2196 of 10502

chartist

can you explain a bit more please - are you just laying them or are you backing them back in running? if so what movement are you looking for before you back them ?

i see 5 minutes was a bit generous to the highlights of the defining moments of the masters - more like 2 or 3 mins - good old auntie beeb - and then we can watch them sit in the studio and discuss it for half an hour before the leaders go out again

chartist2004 - 10 Apr 2005 20:15 - 2197 of 10502

Fund - I lay the 4th fav before the off, then at times, not often, back the leader at around 2's when the next nearest are 4's near the end of race, of these I only back around 5%. I am more than happy to make a small consistent profit by laying.

Scripophilist - 10 Apr 2005 20:35 - 2198 of 10502

Tiger on fire!

2 holes, 2 birdies

The drive on the 1st was 344 yds!

Scripophilist - 10 Apr 2005 20:38 - 2199 of 10502

Chartist, I've written a piece on laying horses on exchanges for racing ahead magazine. Its still in the shops at the moment.

chartist2004 - 10 Apr 2005 20:55 - 2200 of 10502

Scrip - Thanks I'll take a look, the more info the better. I must get my other monitor up and running so I can use 'At The Races Video Pro' to view the races.

Do many others of you use this service, and do you find it helps? tia.

Scripophilist - 10 Apr 2005 20:58 - 2201 of 10502

Not sure about fundy but I'm pretty sure none of the others (including me) will use live feeds aside to figure out if the race is going off on time. We don't rely on following horses or the actual race.

Scripophilist - 10 Apr 2005 21:00 - 2202 of 10502

Was going to do something on the golf this evening but not much to do. Will look at some of the minor markets and see what is available.

Scripophilist - 10 Apr 2005 21:11 - 2203 of 10502

That was weird, DiMarcos ball sat on the green for a minute or so before rolling back 20 yards or so. I'd love to play at Augusta but with greens like that I think I'd need a handicap about 10 times my current one.
