It seems Sinopec may be looking at Afren - from tonight's Daily Telegraph--
'One tale doing the rounds is that Chinese oil company Sinopec is keen on acquiring Afren, the FTSE 250-listed oil explorer with operations in Africa and the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
Afren shares leapt 10pc on Wednesday on speculation the company will either unveil positive drilling results from its Papai well in Kenya or announce a takeover offer from a potential bidder.
Traders said Sinopec – which already has a major presence in West African oil and gas exploration following its £4.5bn acquisition of Aim-listed Addax Petroleum in 2009 – is rumoured to be interested in paying between 215p and 250p a share for Afren, down 0.6 to 151.4p.'

i've been a fan AFR for quite a while and has long looked to have more potential than indicated by its sp ...... t/o rumours for the company (and others) often do the rounds, but little store should be set by them

Interesting that the comment came from Traders! Of course they know far more than journalists and don't have a vested inetersted!!! This rumour regularly does the rounds and is currently without foundation, imo.

now there's a brilliant observation ..... the surprise would have been if there had been any truth in the rumour ..... nevertheless, the truly massive volume is certainly both interesting and strange

as it's so cold, i have installed a static bicycle stand in my office .... this has a variable tension/flywheel so i can start some gentle training for this year's trip to southern loire - sort of just NE of poitiers - in the warm, and also do it as often or for as short/long a time as i feel inclined

FT sector watcher yesterday:
"A dramatic rise in the share price yesterday (AFR), at one point up 18p/share or 13%, on huge volume – around 10 times the 15-day average. It remains unclear as to why the price spiked, with no announcement from the company either yesterday or today. Rumours abound of impending news from the PaiPai prospect onshore Kenya. AFR has a 20% stake in the 290m bbl prospect although it is difficult to see this being worth more than around 20p/share. Other partners in the prospect are Tullow with a 50% share (+3% yesterday) and Canadian-listed Africa Oil with the remaining 30% (+7% since Monday). Other unconfirmed press rumours concern possible bids for AFR by an oil major. All sounds a bit spivvy, and I think it would be wise to tie in some profits on AFR at an 18-month high."
Also broker disagreement with FT:
"The FT has speculated that ExxonMobil (XOM US) may acquire Afren. We would disagree with this view, as we would expect management to reject such a proposal at this share price, particularly given the major East African exploration programme in 2013. We feel that, given Afren’s track record in asset acquisitions, it is more likely to be the acquirer of a company or package of assets, rather than being acquired itself."
