That would be a suitable cartoon for the last Labour government with their obsession with targets. The recent scandal of deaths in several trusts over a number of years has been blamed on the Labour imposed targets which were more important than care.

It seems that a very high %age are still brought in from F/E (Thailand) and other "interesting" countries and then just processed in Belgium, thus qualifying for the EU stamp ..... this is almost certainly the procedure that will be used by UK supermarkets

So, unless the label specifically states UK-reared, it is a racing certainty that it will not have been ...... how to con the customer yet again!

I agree with all the content of post 22621. I also respect the quotation "When In Rome........" I am English and live in Scotland but consider myself British. If Alex Salmond is succesful in persuading the Scots that independance is the way to go, I have a choice either abide by the laws of Scotland or move back to England. Probably if wearing a skirt became compulsory then the latter would become reality :O)

A furious petrol station owner who is being sued by a policewoman after she tripped on a kerb while on a 999 call at his property has hit out at the compensation culture - and said she should have carried a torch.

Steve Jones was stunned when he heard that WPC Kelly Jones was seeking a potential five-figure payout from him after claiming he failed to keep her safe as she investigated a possible break-in.

WPC Jones, 33, was answering a midnight call to a suspected burglary when she tripped over a six-inch kerbstone, and has hired a firm of London solicitors specialising in personal injury lawsuits to sue the petrol station owner, the Mail on Sunday reported. They are claiming the area was poorly lit and the kerb was not sign posted.

Mr Jones, 50, who owns the Nuns’ Bridges Service Station in Thetford, Norfolk, said: “I am incredulous that I am being sued by a police officer whose duty is to protect the public.

“How can anyone feel safe calling the cops if they size you up for compensation while they’re fighting crime?

“Surely policing has elements of both public service and risk. Isn’t that what officers sign up for when they put on the uniform – chasing villains and keeping us safe?”

Father-of-three Mr Jones, 50, who is not related to the officer, said he believed the area was lit up by a street light about ten feet away as well as five canopy lights above his petrol pumps.

He said: "The interesting this is that she did not have a torch with her. Flashlights are standard issue to police officers and it would have helped her if she had one.

"I think there was enough light for her to see around - but it might not have happened if she had a torch. I am astounded that she is blaming me.

The owner, who was checking the petrol station with WPC Jones, said that when she fell over, “I thought nothing of it – other than she must have been a bit embarrassed – and I helped her up. Then we carried on with the search.”

Mr Jones, whose business has previously been targeted by gangs of thieves, said the lawsuit threw up questions about what future robbery victims are supposed to do to avoid being sued by police over health and safety.

“If an officer can now sue you because they’ve tripped over on your property what does that mean for the average homeowner?” he said.

“If you hear a burglar downstairs, do you have to nail down your stair carpet, close the windows and put the lights on before you dial 999?

“This is the health and safety culture at work, the fallacy that someone is to blame for any and every accident and that compensation is free.”

He added:"People do trip over their own feet from time to time and I think this is what happened to her.

"I fell over on the squash court the other day. It was nobody's fault and I didn't try and blame anyone.

Mr Jones had called 999 after the alarm went off at the petrol station on August 25 last year.

He had forgotten about the incident until he received a three-page letter from WPC Jones’s lawyers Pattinson Brewer last week.

The document made a total of 11 allegations against him, including that he failed to turn the lights on or warn her of the kerb.

The policewoman claims she injured her left leg and her right wrist in the fall, although she was well enough to continue the search of the garage at the time.

Mr Jones is accused of “failing to ensure [WPC Jones] was reasonably safe in using the premises for which she was permitted/invited by you to be there” and of a “failure to carry out any and/or adequate risk assessment”.

The letter added that the 999 call-out “exposed our client to an unnecessary risk of injury”.

Keith Vaz, chairman of the Home Affairs Committee, has now demanded urgent Home Office guidelines on the issue, saying: “This civil claim will have huge implications for every citizen if they call police out to their premises to help them in an emergency.

“It is in the public interest to know where exactly people stand in circumstances like this. If there are going to be cases like this, then people will feel reluctant to call the police in case they are sued.

“I do not think in such circumstances the public would feel they had a responsibility for health and safety issues, in the middle of the night while apparently facing danger.

“It’s a bizarre case and we need some urgent guidelines from the Home Office.”

According to Norfolk MP Norman Lamb, any successful lawsuit would “set an extraordinary precedent”.

“I think most people would regard it as quite bizarre that an officer acting in the course of their duties would pursue a claim against a member of the public who has legitimately called them out.

“It is preposterous to imagine that it is appropriate; it is the police doing the job they are employed to do.”

Mother-of-two WPC Jones has refused to answer any questions about the case, said the Mail on Sunday, and she took legal action without the knowledge of her employers at Norfolk Constabulary.

I joined the Police force in 1970 as a Cadet, whilst training we were warned that within 10 years we would probably all be armed, never happened. When I read articles like the above it makes my blood boil. It sums up todays wimp,compensation itus coupled with jobs for the boys Health and Safety nonsense that plagues this country today. As a career choice surely you have to accept that it is more than possible at some point there is a risk of danger. Not sure being a gormless cow and tripping over a kerb quite reaches those heights but there you go eh. Unbelievable

I for one have an obsession about leaving lights on when not necessary - I hate giving unnecessary money to electricty companies. I often wonder when Christmas comes how people can afford all the decorative (some competitive) lights they have outside their homes!!!!! Perhaps that is me being tight. I do agree with cynic about office lights - by the same token do all the royals need lights blaring away in practically every room in view to the public - not that I am against Royals. So much wasted money is spent in security with past obviously more past than present Prime Ministers Security, it is obscene. It would be a better idea to make cuts in all that crap than keep griping on about NHS cuts etc.

Plenty of shops have lights on 24 hours a day..
