Cynic, I fully understand that there have to be cuts - the country is in a mess. I feel that some of the cuts are rather severe and to implement them is going to probably cost more than they will save. Why change DLA to PIP? for example. Ex PM's or at least the ones who left office years ago should pay for their own security at the end of the day they can or should be able to afford to!!!! I have worked all my life and have never claimed umemployment benefit - jobs are very few and far between these days, the ordinary person cannot find full time, most positions are part time.

Job centres I believe are handing pages of vacancies to people but when they apply which has to be done on line now (so heaven help people without a computer) when they do apply there hasn't even been a job in the first place or they have been taken.

One cannot educate a child who does not want to learn, extremely sad but true. End of rant.

I agree with you on something.

This government will be known for its "meanness", it is earning the name of the Nasty party.

I know there are abuses of the welfare system and they should be addressed.

It does seem a little daft that somebody can occupy a 3-4 or more bedroom house indefinitely when the occupying family is of one or two.

But, if they have lived in those houses for 20-30 years or in their late 60s or 70s, their families coming back to them, or the look after their kids, or their offspring, while their children are at work, or have need of another room for medical carers or facilities.

Making the occupiers of the “too large property” move out of their property into smaller properties, (which are not available) in that area where they have their support systems is cruel. This leads to further fragmentation of families and social unity.

(One of the glories of the Thatcher government was the selling off of “social” housing.)

If money had been poured into “local government” social housing building of various “sizes”, then the problem of “under occupation” could have been addressed in a more sensitive way and also the cash utilised, would have filtered into the local communities and into general economy as stimuli.

The Thatcher period will be remembered as the selfish and nasty period of modern government and this government will leave a stench, self-interest and corruption and misgovernment.

I think the issue is with changing culture or varying culture in the UK.
Thos who live on benefit for life don't know where their money come from. So, they are happy with their life, which is more relaxing than those working hard.

They just read that the former head of RBS gets £700k a year tax free. So they believe 20-40k a year is nothing, so what they get is their right.

n fact both are wrong, giving away£700k salary to former RBS boss for destroying the bank, and alowing benefit for life.

Chinse takeaways are more likely to give you food poisoning than a kebab, curry or fish and chips, a survey has shown.

More than half - 55 per cent - of Chinese outlets failed to meet hygiene requirements.

Kebab shops and Indian restaurants also scored poorly, with 53 per cent of kebab shops and 48 per cent of curry houses failing to clean properly.

John Nash, who worked for a private equity company with major education interests, will receive a peerage and become a schools minister. Mr Nash and his wife have given the Tories almost £300,000.

The announcement came just a day after another major donor was appointed to government.

Lord Popat, who was given a peerage in 2010, became a government whip on Wednesday. Lord Popat and his wife have given over £320,000 to support the Conservatives.

The reshuffle followed the resignations of the business minister Lord Marland and Lord Strathclyde, the leader of the House of Lords.

Lord Marland, who resigned to pursue business interests after less than three years in government, has also given the Conservatives over £300,000, leading to concerns about a donor’s merry-go-round of government appointments.

Mr Nash sponsors the Pimlico Academy and has been a non-executive member of the Department for Education’s board for the past two years.

Until Thursday morning, Mr Nash worked at Sovereign Capital, which specialises in the healthcare and education sectors.

The Telegraph previously disclosed that Caroline Nash, Mr Nash’s wife, had funded the office of the former Health Secretary Andrew Lansley while he was in opposition.

Mr Nash was previously the former chairman of one of the biggest private health providers to the NHS, Care UK.

According to Companies House records, he remains a partner at Sovereign Capital Partners, which is a private equity group.

Sovereign Strategy has previously backed the group Alpha Plus, which operates the exclusive Wetherby Preparatory School and Pembridge Hall.

It has also invested in the Greenwich School of Management. In its last review by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, the School was warned that the “quality of student learning opportunities at the institution requires improvement to meet UK expectations.”

Paragon, which organises government-funded apprenticeships, is also backed by Sovereign.

A spokesman for the Department for Education said that Mr Nash would “be stepping away from all relevant business interests while he is serving as a Minister”.

The Permanent Secretary will put in place “arrangements to ensure that no conflict arises between his Ministerial duties and his charitable interests.”

A spokesman for the Prime Minister said: “What counts, and why he is the right person for the job, is his extensive knowledge of the education sector.”

Lord Popat is a Ugandan-born tycoon. The former refugee founded the TLC Group, which owns a string of hotels and care homes across Britain.

The connection between political appointments and donations to parties has raised questions before.

In 2007, the cash-for-honours scandal led to a lengthy police enquiry, during which Tony Blair became the first Prime Minister to be interviewed by the police.

Since becoming David Cameron became Prime Minister in 2010, he has sent a series of political donors to the House of Lords, including hedge fund manager Lord Fink, the financier Lord Magan and businessman Lord Edmiston. Lord Fink has given the Conservatives over £3million
