LOL GF, typical arrogance! What makes you think Ronaldo would want to go back to Old Trafford. Where exactly in England was he born again? No point whingeing about the state of Englands national team when the Premiership attracts the best players in the World. Sadly the majority of fans of teams in the Premiership couldn't give a dam about the National Team.

Yep the reason being they have been crap for years, now if they had been good, that wouldnt be the case.
DID YOU KNOW,
Ronaldo when born was named after Ronald Reagan. And born on the island of Madeira.
Straight up.

One or two of you've mentioned 74, 76, 78, 80, but just because England did'nt get through to the finals Scotland. N Ireland, R O Ireland did which contained players who played in the English leagues.
...
N Ireland, R O Ireland, Scotland, and Wales are foreign re England.

Chris Carson,
On club v country; football and rugby league I prefer club, for rugby union and cricket it's internationals. Preferring club football doesn't stop me enjoying the World Cup and wanting England to do well - looking forward to seeing Japan.
1992 and '94 bad, '96 good; not the Premier League's doing. As I mentioned, I don't blame the Premier League for having less than 30, yes only 30, capable English players.
Cheers,
KidA

On the point of obscene amounts of money being picked up by players, agents, coaches, managers and of course some Directors in just the top tear of English football, this started when large amounts of Murdoch money was allowed to be ring fenced by something called The Premier League Ltd. set up purely for keeping money for the so called top teams in the country.
...Only people not to benefit financially from this windfall are the actual fans of the teams up and down the country... in fact the entrance ticket charges are also obscene in my view.
Add to that the fact that we have a lots of dubious obscenely rich foreign individuals as owners, and the game that we knew (which was by no means perfect) has changed for the worst.

Not sure what you mean with that coment?...Seeing what i said was that most of the players that played in those national teams played in the English leagues, do you have difficulty understanding that?
As to supporting ANY team...No i don't bother, not even my local team who i used to go all over the country watching, I don't like how the systems run and how much money is involved....

One change I'd like to see, keepers not allowed out of the penalty area.

No difficulty understanding that foreign players playing in the English leagues made tournament finals English players playing in the English leagues didn't make. My post just mentions that they are foreign. The number of players playing for both one of those national teams and a club registered to play in the English leagues is about the same now as it was then.

Stan the simple fact is there is to many foreign players in the English leagues and not enough English(Scotish,Welsh etc) being brought on that are world class players, the exception being Townsend who at least shows some skill and enthusiasm....
Spot on !

Missing your point here ????
England were just shite at the time end of. Top 2 teams Leeds and Liverpool were stuffed with foreigners (Scots) and they qualified in '74 and '78 and in '76 bloody Wales (yep and I was there) qualified for the Euro quarter finals !

Go look at the Spanish set up , top of my head 80% of all squads have to qualify to play for Spain.
I blame Sky for the amount of crap foreigners we have playing in the UK keeping our youngsters from developing.

Once again (how many more times?) England could play 11 Ronaldo's out there but if the "way they play" is flawed then we will continue to underperform... And that's the key I'm afraid.

How on earth are Sky at fault ?
More money in the PL ? - Yes
but how does that extend into buying an overseas player instead of an English one ?
Perhaps the reality is that the value for money is overseas, something virtually every club has recognised so Mr Brit either has to sell his services at a cheaper price or suck it

Liverpool teams of that period had more English players than foreign. The point of the post; England were bad before the 'invasion' - it isn't to blame for the state of the national team. The number of players required is small and it isn't the foreigners fault England struggle to do the basics of retaining the ball, and moving and pressing in an organised way.
Cheers,
