For so called socialism to survive you have to have money and that money more often than not is due to capitalism.

I presume you want all equal as that is what your post implies. It also implies, because you did not answer my question that you think that it is right that those who dont work, won't work should be paid to do so by those that do work.

I have no problem with paying just enough at subsistance level, its just the higher than subsistance level I am against.

As for the disabled and truly poor decent types, I again have no problem as I have never stated that those who guenuinly deserve help should not receive it.
Both my brother and Sister in Law are seriously disabled after being in work for many years, so I know only too well how they need assistance.

The minimum wage is £6.19, so £56/week would be 9.05 hours work. At that rate there would be no tax so gross and net would be the same.

However, there is no reason to keep to such low figure. It might be better to get 35 hours of social work for the benefit as an incentive to get a real job.

hays - i was actually aware that i had fallen into the "below taxable threshhold" trap, but i was trying to determine what happened pro-rata (if that makes sense) - e.g. what's the nett score if you earn £90 pw or £120? ..... perhaps i've shot myself badly, as perhaps the tax-free limit is closer to £15k pa (i.e. nearly £300 pw)

I don't think the amount is important. It is perfectly sensible to get benefit recipients to work 35 hours for £56. That would be the deal if you want the benefits. Unfortunately we won't get it while we have a coalition. It is a pity that we have to wait until after the next election to get a clear Conservative majority.

hays - 35 hours for £56 falls heavily into the exploitation category ..... however, there is certainly a balance to be struck between that and something that is at least "liveable" albeit with care - e.g. it doesn't have to pay for the latest mobile phone or running a car

To answer your question, I was a Police Officer for over 25 years, working for most of my service in an area that had the worse reported crime rate in the country, so I doubt that anyone knows more than I do what the underclass (your word not mine) are capable of, Murder, Rape, appalling violence and the rest.
Of course these acts are not limited to any one part of society!

Here is something would upset lefties like goldfinger.

My kids both went to a very posh prep school until 13. There were only 15 pupils in their class. The younger of my sons has just had a class reunion. They are all now 16/17 years old now. The parents of the boy who arranged the reunion paid for everything. I won't tell the venue as if I told you you would be pretty shocked. Licencing laws did not apply as it is a private residence as well as a public building and one of the boys lives there.

On arrival the 15 boys were served champagne and cavier by 5 waiters. A private tour of the premises followed and then dinner waited on by another set of waiters. There was very fine red and white wines followed by port.

A trifle excessive for a primary school reunion.

An interesting sub note is that the boys have now moved on to various public schools such as City, Westminster and every one of them has a minimum of 12 A* IGCSS (quite a lot more difficult than GCSEs) and some with a few more. That level of attainment is what you pay for in private education. I guess most will go to Oxford/Cambridge.

Seemed to be a lot of champagne being popped last night by the left wingers, so it's not just the "upper class cissy boys" who have the money to spend on expensive booze. Yahoo have done an any online poll. The question was 'did Margaret Thatcher change Britain for better or worse'. The result was interesting. 53% voted for better and 47% for worse.
