hays - i was actually aware that i had fallen into the "below taxable threshhold" trap, but i was trying to determine what happened pro-rata (if that makes sense) - e.g. what's the nett score if you earn £90 pw or £120? ..... perhaps i've shot myself badly, as perhaps the tax-free limit is closer to £15k pa (i.e. nearly £300 pw)

I don't think the amount is important. It is perfectly sensible to get benefit recipients to work 35 hours for £56. That would be the deal if you want the benefits. Unfortunately we won't get it while we have a coalition. It is a pity that we have to wait until after the next election to get a clear Conservative majority.

hays - 35 hours for £56 falls heavily into the exploitation category ..... however, there is certainly a balance to be struck between that and something that is at least "liveable" albeit with care - e.g. it doesn't have to pay for the latest mobile phone or running a car

To answer your question, I was a Police Officer for over 25 years, working for most of my service in an area that had the worse reported crime rate in the country, so I doubt that anyone knows more than I do what the underclass (your word not mine) are capable of, Murder, Rape, appalling violence and the rest.
Of course these acts are not limited to any one part of society!

A Sauna and Turkish Bath, don't let the poor underclass find out, they will start rioting after all whats the difference to the rich frittering dosh after dosh at say Aintree and Ascot etc etc on expensive plonk and fashionable buffets etc etc.

Here is something would upset lefties like goldfinger.

My kids both went to a very posh prep school until 13. There were only 15 pupils in their class. The younger of my sons has just had a class reunion. They are all now 16/17 years old now. The parents of the boy who arranged the reunion paid for everything. I won't tell the venue as if I told you you would be pretty shocked. Licencing laws did not apply as it is a private residence as well as a public building and one of the boys lives there.

On arrival the 15 boys were served champagne and cavier by 5 waiters. A private tour of the premises followed and then dinner waited on by another set of waiters. There was very fine red and white wines followed by port.

A trifle excessive for a primary school reunion.

An interesting sub note is that the boys have now moved on to various public schools such as City, Westminster and every one of them has a minimum of 12 A* IGCSS (quite a lot more difficult than GCSEs) and some with a few more. That level of attainment is what you pay for in private education. I guess most will go to Oxford/Cambridge.

Seemed to be a lot of champagne being popped last night by the left wingers, so it's not just the "upper class cissy boys" who have the money to spend on expensive booze. The difference between "upper class cissy boys" and left-wing yobs is that when they get pissed they don't start trashing shops, looting and throwing stones at the police.

One of the major problems with the decrying of the workless, is where are all the jobs,
Unemployed physically fit individuals should probably be expected to do some work in society, if they are able to, but working is not a virtue in itself and although I enjoyed what I did, there are many necessary occupations which I would have considered drudgery or punishment if i was expected to do.

Get the jobs, and certain jobs should be shared out amongst all in society, similar to being in a Kibbutz. It may bring back a respect of some to those carrying out more menial tasks than their own.

hmm! actually oxbridge is not necessarily the place to go ..... in fact, my youngest was well-served by not getting into balliol, going instead to nottingham, where his degree was much better tailored to his chosen area in the real world

though sophisticated adults may appreciate Quatr' Saisons and that ilk, i feel it rather distasteful to waste it on precocious teenagers, more than anything, because they will just not appreciate it

i know that may appear slightly hypocritical and certainly sticky's politics of jealousy, verging on inverted snobbery, cut no ice with me ..... everyone gets dealt a hand at birth, and as they progress through life, it is up to them how they make best use of that

btw, i'm afraid i know of far too many who have been through really good educational establishments and fallen badly off the rails .... more importantly, private education does not necessarily bring out the best results, academic and otherwise

I am told that my children have better tastes than I have and my eldest daughter reminds me that when she was six she used to escort me to an Italian restaurants on a regular basis and enjoyed the food. Those were the days,
