How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Still money available to back Chelsea for the title. If they beat Fulham on Saturday and Arsenal fail to win the title is theirs. I've lumped 50k on Chelsea at varying amounts and may probably hedge a little out just in case but it looks a remote prospect to be honest.

The max points Arsenal can get are 86 so with Chelsea on 82 they need only another five to be sure mathematically. If Man U win all their remaining matches they would only equal Chelsea's points.

Scrip

Goblet of fire just got me out of a hole - had a big loss on alikat from when they pulled the third favourite out and the favs odds fell disproportionally

Scripophilist - 21 Apr 2005 16:04 - 2368 of 10502

I also had a loss on Alikat.

That was a pain. It's worth noting actually that for a rule four at less than 2.5% Betfair don't adjust the market. I am now out of the money on Lannigans Lock.

But my order just filled and is worth three times what I thought? Will have to have a look at this.

Fundamentalist - 21 Apr 2005 17:21 - 2371 of 10502

see staff nurse in the 5.15 was matched at 1000 in running - came with a late run to give whoever laid it a real scare - traded back down to 3.0 but didnt quite get there

scrip - can you explain your last comment re worth three times more than expected

Scripophilist - 21 Apr 2005 17:33 - 2372 of 10502

I got three ticks on the trade instead of the one I thought I had closed out at.

Fundamentalist - 21 Apr 2005 17:35 - 2373 of 10502

thanks scrip

just managed to get the other side of a withdrawal - saw they were withdrawing one and backed pokermilliondotcom - 16% official reduction, price dropped 27%

a tactic i may look to employ in future

Fundamentalist - 21 Apr 2005 18:28 - 2375 of 10502

anyone watching attheraces should have had a nice trade on oceancookie in the next - big mac has been talking it up all day and it is owned by clare balding who he has just interviewed - managed to take 1.4 points out if it - nice :-)

Fundamentalist - 22 Apr 2005 15:45 - 2376 of 10502

Andreas, odds on favourite at Perth 3.30, 12 lengths clear coming to the last traded at 1.03, fell

Scripophilist - 22 Apr 2005 15:46 - 2377 of 10502

Beat me to it!

About 25k traded under 1.10

Fundamentalist - 22 Apr 2005 15:51 - 2378 of 10502

The worst thing is scrip, from a horses point of view, it was a paul nicholls horse that fell and a martin pipe horse that profited - a swing of 16k - the trainers championship had 3k in it before and ends tomorrow - could well cost nicholls the chance of his first ever title and pipe will win his 15th!!!

Scripophilist - 22 Apr 2005 16:00 - 2379 of 10502

So I understand. The commentators were going nutty over it.

Fundamentalist - 22 Apr 2005 16:48 - 2380 of 10502

is it just me or is the racing proving difficult this afternoon - havent had any losses but struggling to get more than 1 or 2 ticks each race

Fundamentalist - 22 Apr 2005 17:05 - 2381 of 10502

Do you think pipe is serious about winning the championship - 2 of the races at newton abbott tonight he has 6 entries in

Harlosh - 22 Apr 2005 17:21 - 2382 of 10502

Having to decorate one of my rental properties so not done much trading for several days, atleast until later in the day. Finding it very difficult. Glad it's not just me Fundy.
