by the way all you guys who are long, do watch out for the all time high at about 640 ..... sp nearly touched that this morning, and that tends to be quite a formidable obstacle

Too volatile for me, but those apparently stunning figures still show huge usage of cash from operations ($62M in 3 months). Profits can be manipulated, but not so easy with the cash. Personally, I would be wary.

Good close tonight, more to come i hope tomorrow, this should hit the 7 pound mark this week or next,in between the profit taking than who knows.but atleast the results are out of the way.how can the profits be manipulated,i dont understand.

ateeq - many businesses which go bust have been profitable (e.g. check out HTP earlier this week. I would put Northern Rock in the same category) but they fail through lack of cash. There are many ways of manipulating profits. A couple for you - SOLA shows stock valued at $156M as at end of March, up from $110M at end December. Just suppose (for arguments sake only) this stock is in reality only worth $120M, then they would actually have made a loss in the quarter. Again, different businesses have different methods of booking sales, which can in reality turn what is really just an order into a sale (and thereby into the P&L account). Cash is cash (unless its Langbar) and even the most incompetent auditors can check the bank balance with some accuracy!

Guess most of you guys are traders rather than investors, so may be sitting on large recent gains in SOLA. I am not a holder, but enjoy crunching balance sheet numbers and a more detailed look at quarterly cash flow flags up a couple of issues to me. I do not know the business well enough to gauge whether this is appropriate, but at end of March SOLA had provided its suppliers with advance payments of $88M, up from $54M at end of December. It had also lent $36M to "Related Parties", up from $13M at end of December. Of these payments, $72M had been received up front from SOLA own customers. Begs the question why SOLA has to support its suppliers to such a great extent (who are they, is this cash being properly used?) and what pressures would there be if their own customers draw the line on up front payments. Also, who are the "Related Parties" and why do they need $36M from SOLA. Probably simple answers, but the numbers large enough to frighten me - can understand why some are banking gains today, but good luck to those brave enough to hold for the ride.
