Splat

Start your computer in safe mode with network drivers.

Check your 'hosts' file which is in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc make a copy of it first and then open it in notepad. If it contains loads of lines with the names of AV sites then these have been put their by the virus to stop you accessing these sites. Delete any line starting with 127.0.0.1 except the one "127.0.0.1 localhost" and save the file.

You need to be logged on with administrator rights and set windows explorer options to enable you to view hidden files and view system files. Make sure you take a copy of the file before you change it.

You should be able to access the AV sites now but stay in safe mode until you have run your scans.

I have to go out now but will look in later.

H, have you tried AVG antivirus? I had a few trojans on the kids pc and it has cleaned them up but still having difficulties with the PC - but new one ordered anyway.

www.grisoft.com

sorry, haven't time to do an HTML link. Hope it works out OK, Rob.

splat - 10 Nov 2004 14:33 - 2492 of 11003

Thanks Optimist. Will try as you suggest and let you know what happens. Although it will have to wait until my son gets home from school as I am not v. knowledgeable when it comes to IT, so don't even know how to start it up in safe mode!
Rob, Have tried AVG, but it won't open on my computer for some reason. :-((

Splat

Are you saying that you can't open the AVG site?

If that is the case, the hosts file is prime suspect.

splat - 10 Nov 2004 14:58 - 2494 of 11003

Optimist - I can open the site, but having downloaded the file, it won't open on my computer

Spaceman - 10 Nov 2004 14:58 - 2495 of 11003

Hi Splat,
Just back hope you have made some progress with Optimists info, some trojans block usefull (using hosts) sites e.g. anti virus scanners, and I think you have that happening however some virus checkers do not work well with others, so if you want to install AVG make sure you have removed or at least switched off the other before the install.

However you need to clear the current infections before sorting that out ;-)

Mr Euro - 10 Nov 2004 17:39 - 2503 of 11003

Can anybody recommend an FTP thingy which will enable me to upload files to my sites? I understand some are free? I am looking on download.com but dont reall know what im looking for? I now have all the key's/passwords etc.. to set it up.

I was led to believe building/hosting pages was simple and cheap! Yea right! First lets deal with the simple: Meta tags, CGI scrips, FTP accounts, Perl scrips, HTML code, H lables, web page conditioning/ranking etc... this is a world designed by techies for techies. It doesn't need to be this complicated!

Now the cost? 1.50 / month web hosting, but you have to pay 12 months in advance with a 10 admin cost per site! Each domain name is only 5 per year, plus 20 admin charge!

Optimist - 10 Nov 2004 17:52 - 2504 of 11003

Mr E

Do a Google for WS_FTP by Ipswitch inc. I believe the basic program is free but they also do a Pro version .

Mr Euro - 10 Nov 2004 18:09 - 2505 of 11003

Thanks, it;s not free but I can get an evaluation copy for 30 days. What is the function of FTP? Wh can;t files been transfered the normal way?

Kayak - 10 Nov 2004 18:16 - 2506 of 11003

Mr E, you don't need an FTP package, at least not initially. See my post 2475 above.

Optimist - 10 Nov 2004 18:17 - 2507 of 11003

I believe FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol ;)
