THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

Labour election victory in 2015 looks a distant prospect, says pollster

'Troubling' research, suggesting party is perceived as incapable of making tough decisions, will be put to conference

Labour has a mountain to climb to win the next election outright, and is still failing to chalk up big enough leads on image or leadership to make it likely to secure an overall majority, according to polling which will be put to a Labour conference to be addressed this weekend by Ed Miliband.

There has not been a single time in more than 80 years when an opposition has returned to power at the first attempt with an overall majority. He also suggests no opposition has gone on to win power without at some point achieving a lead of at least 20%.

The biggest Labour lead recorded by any opinion poll during its current period of opposition was 16%, recorded by TNS last September.

"No opposition could be happy with the fact that, when the economy is flatlining, just one person in three thinks it [the Labour party] would take the right decisions to secure greater prosperity.

By two to one, voters think the Tories have the courage to take tough and unpopular decisions. By three to two, voters think Labour lacks that courage.

I have just put a potential loaf of soda bread in the oven. It was almost too easy. I wonder what will go wrong.

At a Labour think tank conference today in London, Ed Miliband has restated his opposition to David Cameron's position on an EU referendum. He has also said that he won't promise a referendum if Labour wins the next election.

That looks to be a dangerous stance.

I wonder why!

Reuters) - A senior minister said on Sunday he would support an exit from the European Union if there were a vote on the issue, as Prime Minister David Cameron faces a revolt over Europe from MPs in his own party.

Up to 100 eurosceptic Conservative members of parliament are expected to back an amendment this week criticising the legislative plans unveiled by the coalition government last Wednesday because they did not include a bill for a referendum on Britain's continued EU membership.

Ministers have been ordered not to join the rebels but will be allowed to abstain, a sign of the extent of the divisions that have dogged Cameron's party for decades.

Three senior ministers, including Education Secretary Michael Gove, said on Sunday they were ready to abstain.

Gove went further, becoming the most senior Conservative figure to publicly confirm that he would back Britain's withdrawal from the European Union if there were a vote based on the current terms of the relationship.

"I'm not happy with our position in the European Union but my preference is for a change in Britain's relationship with the European Union," said Gove, seen as a possible rival to Cameron. "Life outside would be perfectly tolerable, we could contemplate it, there would be certain advantages."

Haystack,

I was curious how your soda bread turned out?

Have you tried making your own pizzas? If you've got teenagers at home, I can guarantee they'll love them!

I use Jamie Oliver's dough recipe (which is pretty much the basic mix for most breads), and a shop bought jar of passata with onions and basil for the base. The other topping are whatever take your fancy (my fave is tuna, sweetcorn, anchovies, olives and mozarella). After a few attempts, it's easy to produce thin and crispy pizzas with a light and airy crust which are every bit as good as anything out of Pizza Express, and a close second to the pizza joints with the pukka wood-burning bread ovens.

And the best bit - Jamie is a real lard-arse and his dough mix recipe to serve 4 will actually serve about 10! This means that you will invariably have dough left over which you can wrap in cling film and put in the fridge for 3 or 4 days where it will continue to rise. I then chop black olives and sun-dried tomatoes and roll them into the left over dough to bake a kind of Mediterranean style small ciabatta loaf.
