Hi Splat,
Just back hope you have made some progress with Optimists info, some trojans block usefull (using hosts) sites e.g. anti virus scanners, and I think you have that happening however some virus checkers do not work well with others, so if you want to install AVG make sure you have removed or at least switched off the other before the install.
However you need to clear the current infections before sorting that out ;-)

Well that's two of us on AOL who are having to get on site or
anywhere else on the internet for that matter, via IExplorer
as direct access via AOL isn't possible. Something is mighty screwy
on AOL this afternoon!

Can anybody recommend an FTP thingy which will enable me to upload files to my sites? I understand some are free? I am looking on download.com but dont reall know what im looking for? I now have all the key's/passwords etc.. to set it up.
I was led to believe building/hosting pages was simple and cheap! Yea right! First lets deal with the simple: Meta tags, CGI scrips, FTP accounts, Perl scrips, HTML code, H lables, web page conditioning/ranking etc... this is a world designed by techies for techies. It doesn't need to be this complicated!
Now the cost? 1.50 / month web hosting, but you have to pay 12 months in advance with a 10 admin cost per site! Each domain name is only 5 per year, plus 20 admin charge!

Mr E, you don't need an FTP package, at least not initially. See my post 2475 above.

Mr E, as Kayak says above you do not have to get a FTP prog you can use explorer however WS-FTP as recommended by Optimist is excellent and pretty cheap. Since I switched to using it I would not want to use Explorer FTP again.
I am pretty sure there is still a free version but its well hidden.

Mr E, I just had a look at the Ipswitch site and it does look as though the free version has gone, but you might be able to find it somewhere else, however if I remember correctly its a very old version. I was usisng v8 but I have just upgraded to v9.

Thanks gus. Have downloaded FTP pro now so will try it. Dont mind paying if I need to but this site lark, in terms of costs, is starting to add up (50 here, 50 there, another 50 there....). I'll try and upload the html code/files now, only about 100 files and it's odds on even if the transfer goes well the thing wont work properly :-)
I have now joined my fellow webmasters and found this decent article, well worth a read:

I knew this would happen. Uploaded the files into one directory but nothing works (I can see the files have arrived at the hosting company and can manage them there). If i look at the domain name all I can see is the place holder that I put there a few days ago.
There must be a way of pointing the domain to the files or something?

Did you upload a file called index.htm or index.html? That is where you will be taken if you type the name of the site.
