Good article on Anti-Spyware products at

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,118362,pg,1,00.asp

"You've almost certainly encountered the ads: A dialog box pops up on your system, bearing the message "Warning! Your computer may be infected with spyware" and suggesting that you scan your computer immediately. Click it, and you often reach a Web site providing a "free spyware scanner" that finds all sorts of malware on your PC--and then offers to sell you software that will clean it all up.

Should you buy these products? Based on our tests, our opinion is no. Following complaints from several PC World readers, we tested seven heavily advertised spyware-removal tools-- MyNetProtector, NoAdware, PAL Spyware Remover, SpyAssault, SpyBlocs, Spyware Stormer, and XoftSpy--and found that none were as effective as reputable free products such as Spybot Search & Destroy. A couple even installed new spyware."

Warning: I used a company called https://www.123-reg.co.uk to host my sites. The appear cheap on the surface but are full of hidden charges. AVOID.

Optimist - 11 Nov 2004 14:34 - 2528 of 11003

Mr E

Now would be a good time to make sure you can transfer your domain to another provider. Have you checked out MyHosting.com ?

Mr Euro - 11 Nov 2004 15:15 - 2529 of 11003

Hi Opt, no will do thanks. Yes can transfer at no cost but little point when you have paid for 12 months hosting in advance, admin costs, one-off set-up costs etc.. or perhaps its still cheaper than having to buy their web building software.

Dil, sorry, battery went, keep an eye on my sites (if they ever work).

Edit - If I move domain names I have to pay the registration fee again (so 8squid for .com)

Kayak, PHP and ASP only work with Linux servers (not MS), not supported by www.123-reg.co.uk. as they run MS. This is turning into a joke.

Mr Euro - 11 Nov 2004 17:05 - 2530 of 11003

Ha, why don't they tell you all this before hand!? So not all hosting compnaies are equal and you need to spec them first. I had a good moan at them and their underhand tactics, wanted to speak on the phone but it costs 50p per minute (from UK) ...the story continues....

Hi,

These costs are not hidden at all. We make you aware of this on the hosting details page on our website.

Our SiteBuilder Express program is only 49.99 - the one you are referring to is 149.99 and you will find that this is far superior to any web building package you can find for free.

123-reg supports only the following coding languages:
HTML
SSI (shtml)
CGI/Perl

123-reg hosting does NOT support:
MySQL
MsSQL
PHP
ASP
JSP
.NET

If you require hosting that supports these languages, we recommend our sister hosting company www.webfusion.co.uk. You can order a discounted WebFusion account via your 123-reg control panel.

Kids !

My 2 year old got hold of either the mouse or the keyboad and has managed to move the task bar to the left of the screen vertically. Please tell me how to move it back to the bottom ?????

I've tried clicking and dragging with it unlocked to no avail.

:-(

Kayak - 11 Nov 2004 21:25 - 2532 of 11003

Mr Euro if you get really good Bullie will offer you a job :-)

Kayak - 11 Nov 2004 21:26 - 2533 of 11003

michaelc, dragging is the way to do it, perhaps you're not clicking on the right place?

michaelc - 11 Nov 2004 21:31 - 2534 of 11003

Kayak.....tried that earlier but couldn't get it to move BUT just tried it again and it worked ! Hmmmmmmmm

Mr Euro - 11 Nov 2004 22:15 - 2535 of 11003

Kayak, I am doing this for two reasons:

a) so I can understand what techies do in their own environment, I have a lot who work for me and if one is able to make a strong link between business/technoogy then it's adventageous

b) to make money and gain some experience :-)

Mike couldn't afford me, and even if he could he would need to move up to chairman and let me run the company :-)

sutherlh1 - 12 Nov 2004 10:22 - 2536 of 11003

Thanks for all suggestions on my Norton problems. Unfortunately despite downloading suggested Spyware etc, I was unable to use the removal step as the programmes seemed to be frozen from that point. I am now considering replacing the hard drive, is this a big job?, maybe better left to the professionals,

Optimist - 12 Nov 2004 10:43 - 2537 of 11003

sutherlh1

Have you run the scans and removal tools in safe mode? Many viruses have the ability to block or interfere with the AV programms. Safe mode has more chance of getting round this.

There must be a way roound this so don't replace your hard drive yet.

sutherlh1 - 12 Nov 2004 11:20 - 2538 of 11003

I haven't tried safe mode. How do I get my computer in this mode, thanks
