Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).
Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.
cheers GF.

gf you obviously know nothing about golf! It may at one time have been a "class ridden sport", but there are plenty of public golf courses in this country which don't charge a fortune for a green fee and any youngster who would like to play can hire a set of golf clubs and go for a game with his friends, or hit some balls on a driving range. I see lots of young kids playing golf now and they don't come from priviledged backgrounds. ( You may not be applauding me any longer after that post ! )

Classic ignorant remark GF re Golf. When I moved to Scotland 12 years ago I was pleasantly surprised that in Aberdeen, school children had a choice of going to the swimming baths or playing golf. They also have inter school competitions, so your remark "class ridden sport only accessible to the toffs in most towns2 utter rubbish mate.

We can affect the life of people in other countries through exposure of internet and TV. rather than military. Education and internet works better.
Why to waste money and get involved in such barbaric conflicts?

The % is minimal playing golf. Dont overstate.
Municipal course is about only one open to kids here where I live.
AND adults hate them on the course.
AND can most working kids familys afford the yearly membership of over well well over a grand here in my area........I dont think so.

there are now a huge number of pay-and-play courses, ranging from the basic 9-hole to some very high quality ones indeed ...... playing golf is nothing whatsoever to do with class or even especially the cost, but more to do with being able to afford the time ..... furthermore, you might be amazed to learn that most clubs and indeed counties have very active programmes to introduce even very young children of both sexes to the sport
fishing is undoubtedly the most popular participant sport in uk, and that is enjoyed by millions from all economic classes of society, though that is not a particularly cheap hobby either
time you stopped being such an inverted snob old bean

In most places in the world municipal / public golf courses are the mainstay of the sport. My parents used to live in Canada for a few years. The city where they lived had 4 municipal and 2 private courses. The public courses had no membership costs. It was just turn up and play and the cost was low as well.

Granted I live in a posh area Holmfirth, but from what Ive seen its the same all over this area.

shows what you know you silly old fool ..... new clubs are expensive, but 2nd-hand go very cheaply and can even be hired for only a few pounds
own up and admit that you don't actually have any interest whatsover in golf, and just spout nonsense from your all-too-typical preconceived prejudices
like i said, you're just an inverted snob and i fear, tending towards the worst of that ilk

The face of golf has been changing in this country over the last few years, there are not so many private members clubs any more as it was becoming too expensive. More and more people are just paying either five-day memberships, or pay and play, also youngsters and women are becoming more accepted at golf clubs. If you want to play at Wentworth or Sunningdale yes, I agree, it is silly money and if you are a woman and would like to play at Muirfield you are actually not allowed to unless you are invited to play with a male member of the club.

Once went up Crosland Moor local golf course, went for a drink a sat on what I was later told was the captains chair!!!!!!.
Reserved they said that chair ....... I said no chairs reserved so proceeded with my larger.
Big posh knob came over and threatned me that it was his chair, said he would flog my behind if I didnt vacate it immediatly.
Smashed him straight on the chin and flung him against the wall.
Took 6 of them to get me out.
Pals tho were banned.
Now tell me its not a snob sport.

Actually I would prefer my children to take up golf rather than football. If you look at the supposed 'role models' in football then you are really struggling to find any that you would want kids to look up to, whereas in golf at least there is a strong code of conduct and civilised 'role models'.

no ... you were just being totally boorish and of course, were the story true, you would quite rightly have been done for assault or even abh
you'ld also have received a good kicking had you tried a similar silly stunt in a rugby club of either code or miners' pub
now try to stop making a total wally of yourself, hard as that may be

if you'd had the brains, though clearly you did not (nor i), then you would have been very surprised, though you might not have liked mixing with all those black, white and slant-eyed kids whose parents had inculcated aspirations to succeed
no, you're much happier being an inverted snob making a big song and dance about having to walk to school in bare feet and all that sort of crap - even it's not true
the politics of jealousy really do have a very nasty smell about them, and the proponents often just sanctimonious prigs - but not you of course

According to Google, Leeds Celtic is Leeds University American Football Club. Hmmm, wonder if Fishfinger can remember how old he was when he used to play for them???
