Tried that but it won't let me.

Edit : Prat that I am. Forgot about the 'unlock' facilty. Effects of the weekend's wine??? Thanks

Now trying Mozilla as 1 of my browsers.

When I use IE it puts in my other browsers toolbar (Yahoo) which I find useful for getting at Yahoo mail. Any idea of how to set this up in Mozilla please? I can see how to install new toolbars but not how to import a specific icon from another browser.

PS I like Yahoo mail 'cos it stores it in web cyber space for me.

Anyone got the telephone number for customer support for Symantec
I've lost it and really need to contact them. Have apparently to
configure Norton Internet Security to stop it blocking AOL broadband
Cheers people!!!

Mr Euro - 15 Nov 2004 16:46 - 2572 of 11003

No but you will probably find it on their site.

Kayak, I have figured out the dog noise, it was somebody singing on/off to AOL :-)

sutherlh1 - 15 Nov 2004 18:27 - 2573 of 11003

Further to my problems with my computer mentioned above. I have tried to go thru Spaceman's recommendations. I was unable to download the second download of Trend Sysclean. It said my Java script was not compatable and directed me to the Sun Microsystem site where I tried to download a compatable version. The Sun site said it encountered a problem and could not download to me (as Mircosoft also cannot). However I did manage to download Ad-Adware 6.0 and Spybot. I have run these in safe mode, AD-aware found 4 files to be removed, Spybot found 34. I obviously used the removal tools on both programmes. I repeated the removal process again and one threat 'DSO Exploit' detected by Spybot remains. I have retried several times but it still remains and has 5 entries in files starting HKEY_USERS\. I tried to search for these files but search mentioned these were not valid files names. Spybot also advised me that 'There is a security hole in IE allowing websites to execute code without asking you first'
I don't know where to go next, maybe reformat my hard drive or replace it.
If i go this route, how Do I save my documents and my photos files without risking contamination?
Again appreciate very much the help given me by this site, especially Optimist, Spaceman, Robb and Splat. My AOL spyware works now and updates and has blocked several sites, so some progress has been made.

7thFloor - 15 Nov 2004 19:11 - 2574 of 11003

sutherlh1 : Side-issue: I wouldn't worry about DSO Exploit. It seems harmless although it is quite easy to remove if you don't mind dabling in the registry. I re-loaded my PC to factory settings recently & it had Exploit in it from day 1! (Although exploit has 5 entries - it only takes 3 or 4 regedits to cure the f****r!) This is where Spaceman will warn about touching the registry - and he's quite correct!

Experts : What about a Disk Check for sutherlh1? Might it help??

Etid: oooerr ! Am I repeating myself aboyt chiskdek? My daughter has just announced that she's having a 7thFloor junior of the male variety so I'm a little pit bished!!!

7thFloor - 15 Nov 2004 20:30 - 2575 of 11003

..... and how about using Google to vet what processes are running ?

Optimist - 15 Nov 2004 20:46 - 2576 of 11003

sutherlh1

Sounds like you are almost there.

As 7th floor says, the DSO Exploits can be ignored so long as your system is up to date. If you can't download the Trend AV you can always go to one of the other AV sites and do an on line check. Norton, Macafee and Panda are all good.

I think your computer should be back to normal now so you can go back into normal mode and re enable NAV which should now work. If you haven't got SP2 yet get it as soon as you can and before you connect to the internet make sure that the Windows XP firewall is enabled.

If you have got SP2 then it will be enabled but in either case, run Windows Update and install any fixes the suggest.

Spaceman - 15 Nov 2004 21:28 - 2577 of 11003

sutherlh1, yes sounds as though your making good progress, the Syscleam is really an emergency tool for removing a lot of trojans and other threats, it does sound as though most of the rubbish on your machine has been cleaned. Have you gone back into normal mode and installed all the microsoft critical updates?

Have you still got any problems?

By the way reinstall is a fairly major job, I do not recommend it for this sort of problem.

I agree with the others dont worry about DSO exploit at them moment.

Question about Firefox...

I have just set up a profile for myself rather than the default, now I can't access my list of bookmarks and have to recreate it. How can I reverse this or import my bookmarks from the default setting?

robber - 16 Nov 2004 23:48 - 2579 of 11003

Seymour;

file , import.

good luck

Seymour Clearly - 16 Nov 2004 23:53 - 2580 of 11003

Thanks, didn't spot that.

edit Doesn't import from the previous Firefox settings though :-(
I had it all beautifully set up.... Better than nothing :-))

scussy - 17 Nov 2004 02:03 - 2581 of 11003

i will be helping my brother to set up a WI-FI ASUS router with NTL cable,
this is for his PC and laptop,
is there anything i should look out for,or will the intructions be that easy,
he does have the boards for the tower and laptop,
steve

Optimist - 17 Nov 2004 12:27 - 2582 of 11003

Scussy

They tend to be fairly straight forward but there will be a few traps along the way.

I'm assuming that it is a wirless router/NTL modem.

Enable DHCP.

If it and one computer has ethernet ports then connect by ethernet cable first and get the broadband working. Then enable the WiFi.

If either your PC or laptop only support 802.11b then you will have to use WEP security (make sure you use a strong key) otherwise go for the higher one.

Once you are up and running, hide the SSID on the wirless router and specify permitted MAC addresses that can connect.

scussy - 18 Nov 2004 02:09 - 2583 of 11003

thanks optimist,

as NTL was upgrading WEDS i did not go over,as i think you have to register the router and the laptop with NTL,
does the PCI wi-fi card have to be in the tower or can you use the ethernet in the pc tower,
he has a WI-FI PCI board for PC and the laptop has an internal wi-fi,it's a sony viera laptop,
i think he will want to transfer data from laptop to his PC later on,
he does know an IT guy but he has only done the BT adsl routers,
whats the differnce between BT and NTL,is it not the same sort of set-up,

steve

ps,when i did my one,i only found out at the end after hours of trying that the router had to be regestered with NTL for it to work, the address is https://autoreg.autoregister.net/

http://https://autoreg.autoregister.net/

Optimist - 18 Nov 2004 09:58 - 2584 of 11003

Scussy

In my post above I was assuming that there was little difference between BT and NTL but it looks like the autoregister could complicate things.

The principle is still the same though. If the router has a hard wire connection use that first then setup broadband then the wirless network. If a hard wired connection is not possible then you have to do the wireless bit first.

Once set up, transfering info between computers is easy.

Mr Euro - 18 Nov 2004 11:57 - 2585 of 11003

This is a really daft question. I live in the middle of nowhere, and I mean the middle of nowhere. My nearest neighbour is 3 miles away, I have a hector of land, 4 acre wood complete with tractor, well and a huge pool - it's paradise!

I have more chance of flying to the moon than getting broadband. If I were to set up a network would it possible to have very fast internet access? I have no ides how this works but I think it can work without a telephone line?

Optimist - 18 Nov 2004 12:20 - 2586 of 11003

Mr E

How much do you want to spend??

Assuming that you are not in range of any WiFi service, you could look into ISDN which is normally 64hbps and can go to 128 (or more if you have multiple lines) after that you are on to leased lines, sattellite or microwave all of which are very expensive.

DocProc - 18 Nov 2004 13:44 - 2587 of 11003

Perhaps the very first thing you should do is get yourself some of this?
