ZOO DIGITAL, Groundbreaking Technology. (ZOO)

goldfinger - 30 Jun 2003 10:37

DVD EXTRA, the technology that should see this company through to profits and a very bright future.
DVD-Extra

During the year the Group accelerated its development of a revolutionary
authoring software for producing interactive DVD-Video discs that will play on
any standard consumer DVD player. We applied for and received a SMART grant
award of 188,000 from the Department of Trade and Industry to assist with the
research and development. DVD-Extra unlocks the hidden interactive capabilities
that exist in every player, and allows developers to produce titles that exhibit
many of the properties of multimedia CD-ROM on a standard, unmodified, DVD
player.

ZOO's principal offering is a product for authoring interactive DVD-Video discs
called DVD-Extra Studio. This tool operates in a similar way to multimedia
authoring products that are designed for creating CD-ROM applications for PC and
Macintosh, but produces DVD-Video disc images as its output. It performs a
similar function to so-called DVD authoring products that are designed
specifically for creating DVD-Video discs, but due to the patent-pending
authoring method it employs, it offers substantial cost savings for companies
that are involved in the production of DVDs and also enables more sophisticated
functionality to be developed.

ZOO will license DVD-Extra Studio to multimedia developers and Compression and
Authoring facilities. Charges will be levied on a pay-per-use basis, such that
customers will pay a fee to ZOO for each project that uses DVD-Extra Studio.

The Group has applied for patents to protect the core DVD-Extra technology and
is continuing to further develop and protect its intellectual property
worldwide.

Outlook

Following the successful fundraising of 1.5m gross through the share placing
which was completed on 2nd June 2003 the Group looks forward to positive
progression. The portfolio of products is expanding, with a focus on the
development of our own intellectual properties. The board believes that the
combination of publishing low risk licensed product and in-house own brands
together with the huge potential of DVD-Extra Studio places the Group in an
excellent position for a move to profitability and significant future growth.

The Group plans to exploit the DVD-Extra technology internationally and has
established an Early Adopter Programme consisting of around twenty companies
including Technicolor, Warner and Comchoice, leading to the first commercial
release of the product within twelve months. We believe that the uniqueness of
DVD-Extra and the filing of international patents will allow ZOO to build and
maintain significant differentiation over other authoring tool providers.

Zoo Digital Group PLC
18 March 2005

18 March 2005

ZOO DIGITAL GROUP PLC
('ZOO' or 'the Group')

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE

- Feasibility study completed for DVD-EXTRA STUDIO in next generation DVD -
- Next version of DVD-EXTRA STUDIO to be released in April 2005 as planned -

ZOO Digital Group plc, the world's provider of leading tools for the production
of interactive DVD-Video content, today announces an update on its technology in
the areas of next generation DVD and the release of the new version of DVD-EXTRA
STUDIO.

Next Generation DVD

ZOO has completed a series of feasibility studies on next generation high
definition home video formats. Following this feasibility study DVD-EXTRA
STUDIO, ZOO's professional development system, will be enhanced to incorporate
support for the next generation of video discs in the two leading formats
currently being developed by the major electronics corporates. These new high
definition formats are called 'HD DVD' and 'Blue-ray disc'.

Unlike conventional DVD authoring software, DVD-EXTRA STUDIO will provide a
multi-format development system that enables professionals to cost effectively
design a video disc title and then automatically generate that title in any or
all supported formats i.e. Standard Definition DVD, Blu-ray or HD DVD.

DVD EXTRA STUDIO version 1.6

The next version of the DVD-EXTRA STUDIO software will be released in April as
planned. DVD-EXTRA STUDIO version 1.6 is a significant development and
introduces important new 'linear' authoring features. Previously, when producing
home video titles, DVD-EXTRA STUDIO was designed to be used in conjunction with
other DVD authoring tools such that ZOO's software provided the interactive
content for a DVD, for example games, and other software provided the linear or
non-interactive content i.e. the film.

The new version provides key linear authoring functionality which will be
further enhanced in future versions, enabling a customer to develop home video
titles entirely within DVD-EXTRA STUDIO.

Stuart Green, Chief Technology Officer of ZOO Digital Group PLC commented:

'With the advent of two new video formats, DVD authoring facilities have been
facing the prospect of having up to three separate systems for developing titles,
and creating each project three times. We believe that a single development
environment is the ideal way forward enabling our customers to develop a title
once and then deploy it multiple times. We are working alongside the developers
of both future disc formats at the highest level and are members of the DVD
Forum and the Blu-ray Disc Association. ZOO's technology will, uniquely, be
compatible with all three formats and as such we see the development of the new
high definition formats as a significant commercial opportunity.'

Zoo eases DVD technology fears
LONDON (ShareCast) - Zoo Digital (LSE: ZOO.L - news) pleased investors today as the group said the latest version of its DVD technology would Advertisement

support all forms of future DVD platforms, easing fears that its software could be made redundant.

Zoo launched the first copy of its DVD-Extra Technology last year, though with the imminent launch of competing platforms in the next generation DVD market there have been questions raised over which competitor will win.

Reminiscent of the Video battle between VHS and Betamax, Sony is preparing to launch its Blu-Ray discs while Toshiba is readying its HD-DVD technology and like its predecessor, there will only be one winner.

Not to be left behind in the wrong camp, Zoo Digital said today that its next generation technology, DVD-Extra Studio, will support both of the two leading formats, enabling companies to design a title and automatically generate the title in both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

Zoo's next edition of the software will be released in April, as previously announced, though this time Zoo said customers will be able to develop home video titles entirely within its technology package.

The company is already holding discussions with leading Hollywood studios regarding its technology, which is the only platform that enables companies to include extra features and interaction on DVD titles at a fraction of the time and cost.

Interactive DVDs : The New Frontier ?

Location: Auditorium K, Level 4

Description: The latest Interactive DVD releases for education and entertainment

DVDs full potential as an interactive entertainment tool is yet to be realized. As everything in entertainment is going interactive, major toy companies as well as video distributors are starting to look at interactive DVD as another differentiator for their brands and products.
Interactive DVDs go beyond just providing multi-angles,
in-line links or subtitle tracks. Studios are now offering
interactive games, music juke-boxes and other interactive extras
which will keep the audiences engaged for hours and hours after
the linear show is watched. Interactive DVDs are also
facilitating family social interaction, which explains why
innovative toy companies and board game suppliers are going
after this market. A few challenges remain on the business side:
Audiences need to be educated, distribution and marketing challenges
have to be solved, for this sector to become mainstream. This panel of creative producers and technology providers will discuss their
production and market experiences to date.

Zoo Digital goes mobile
MoneyAM
Zoo Digital Group, the AIM-listed games publisher, said it signed a product development agreement with Tuna Mobile.

The agreement allows Tuna Mobile, a UK-based software developer, to develop Zoo's games titles Actua Sports and Alien Hominid so they could be downloaded into mobile phones and other wireless platforms.

PlayerX, a mobile content distributor, meanwhile, will manage the distribution of these titles by acting as brokers and introducing the titles to the mobile network operators and portals.

These titles will start to become available in the early summer of 2005, Zoo said, adding it will receive a royalty for each download of the games.
