Oil price slump to trigger new US debt default crisis as Opec waits

Falling oil prices and and US shale drillers drowning in a sea of debt could be the spark for a new credit crunch

According to research from JP Morgan Asset Management, of the 12 largest shale oil basins in the US, 80pc are barely profitable, with prices of oil below $80 per barrel. More worrying is that these projections don’t include interest payments on debt made by shale producers.

Rig counts also suggest that US drillers are beginning to feel the pinch.
According to Baker Hughes, the number of rigs targeting shale oil in the US fell to the lowest level since August this week. Drilling companies in the massive Eagle Ford shale area of Texas shut down rigs at the fastest rate.

assuredly saudi is very happy to put the squeeze on shale oil producers

not sure if your russian parallel is true however, as russia is surely very close to bankruptcy

nor do i see "US debt default" as remotely likely due to low oil prices, though some of the marginal and leveraged shale oil producers may well go under

What does all that mean for AFR shareholders good news or bad

Well SKAGEN have reduced their holding but in the last few months South Atlantic Petroleum and Standard Life have both increased their holdings to 7%
