How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Just been looking at the prices for this weekends matches. I think they are mainly way off the mark. All the bottom four are priced to win their games and the odds look very weird indeed.

cunningham - 10 May 2005 21:47 - 2696 of 10502

Right - So we Back Saints and Lay the rest then Script.

i dare say there is now more of a chance of ferguson giving them the hair drier treatment and sending out his best team saturday to get a good win under the belt prior to the cup final.

As for most of them, on the effort levels they have put in then they should have no need for a rest

Scripophilist - 10 May 2005 21:50 - 2698 of 10502

Well whatever happens this will be a season end I wont forget as long as I live for sure. Now I'll be there as well it will be one for the scrap book. If the match get stopped for some nutter on the pitch you know what has happened.

cunningham - 10 May 2005 21:51 - 2699 of 10502

Last home game of the season and I see all the Man U fans are staying behind to thank there players for the season.

just had a quick flick - think your right, they all look way overdone:

Norwich 2.32 to win away from home, something they have failed on their previous 18 attempts - going to lay norwich

Southampton 2.38 vs Man Utd 2.92 - sorry guys but im having some of the 2.92

West Brom 1.68 at home to Portsmouth - another lay

CPalace 2.32 away to Charlton who are 3.1 - yet another lay

Scripophilist - 10 May 2005 21:54 - 2701 of 10502

I'll run the stats on Friday and post up based on short and long term form and compare. I think the odds represent a remarkable turnaround in form or a downright fraud if all of them come in!

cunningham - 10 May 2005 21:56 - 2702 of 10502

Fundy,

With those odds and no emotional involvement there should be some good opportunities. I think the market is full of hopeful fans wanting there team to win and stay up.

Of course we all know that Saints will get the only win this weekend. ;-)

ive already put my lays into the market -cant believe the prices will not have changed by saturday and if they havent then ill let em run as i cant see 2 out of 4 winning which is break even

Scripophilist - 10 May 2005 21:58 - 2704 of 10502

Probably a good move Fundy.

Fundamentalist - 10 May 2005 21:59 - 2705 of 10502

Man Utd players doing a lap round the ground - it must be about 20% full - who says football fans are fickle lol

Scripophilist - 10 May 2005 22:05 - 2706 of 10502

I remeber the Arsenal fans being shocked that all the Southampton fans stayed behind at the end of the FA Cup final. Hell it was 1976 the last time we had anything to shout about we weren't going to miss the chance despite the fact we lost.

the bigger the club and the more success they have had the more fickle they get - i have been astounded with the reactions of some arsenal fans sometimes and have often admired the fans of some of the so called smaller clubs - i remember newcastle fans at highbury a few years back when arsenal were winning 4-0 with about 20 mins to go and the only fans you could hear were the geordies with songs like were gonna win 5-4, shall we sing a song for you etc etc - and with 10 mins to go some of the arsenal fans started to leave to beat the traffic - unbelievable

Bit more bad news for you saints fans - expected though:

Southampton's plea for Peter Crouch to be available for their crucial last game of the season has been rejected by the Football Association.
The Saints striker was red-carded for apparently elbowing Gonzalo Sorondo during the 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace.

But his club, desperate for their key forward to be included against Manchester United on Sunday, wanted his ban overturned.

The FA's disciplinary panel threw his appeal out at a hearing on Tuesday.

If Saints defeat United, they could avoid relegation from the Premiership and Crouch, with 12 Premiership goals this season, would have helped their cause.

I don't think anyone can have any complaints about his ban being upheld

Southampton are currently third from bottom and a point behind Norwich, while Crystal Palace and West Brom are the other clubs aiming to avoid the drop.

In addition to missing the game against Manchester United, Crouch will also sit out the first two matches of next season, no matter what division Southampton are in.

Meanwhile midfielder David Prutton has declared himself ready to contribute to the Southampton cause on Sunday, should manager Harry Redknapp need him.

Prutton, who received a 10-match ban after pushing referee Alan Wiley during a match in February, played in a specially-arranged friendly against a youth team selection after a reserve-team match was cancelled.

"It was a good work-out and it was great to be playing again," said Prutton.

"After so long out I was looking forward to the reserve game and was gutted when it was called off but the other match was played at a good tempo, to be fair, and I have to thank the lads who played for turning out.

"Now I feel sharp and I'm ready for Sunday - if the manager feels he needs me."

Definately a conspiracy!

jeffmack - 11 May 2005 13:50 - 2710 of 10502

They are even talking about Crouch playing for England...LOL

Anyone trading this afternoon - exeter are running approx 35 minutes late - a punter was taken seriously ill in the betting ring

Harlosh - 11 May 2005 15:52 - 2712 of 10502

Just starting. Hate it when the timing is cocked up. Got to wait till 16.10 now. Very frustrating.

Harlosh - 11 May 2005 15:53 - 2713 of 10502

Never know when they are going to suspend for the start either which makes trading difficult.
