The Winter 2006-07 Golfing Thread (GOLF)

markusantonius - 07 Dec 2006 22:35

Hi, guys.

Further to 5 enquiries re: past golfing threads plus 3 requests for me to start a new one, just thought I would get the ball rolling pre-Xmas as the long winter nights draw in. So, now let us talk amongst ourselves about ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING CONCERNING the wonderful pastime of: GOLF.

Herewith I start this in good nature to encourage "friendly banter" devoid of hostility amongst fellow golfers: whether they be Pro's, Category One players, average club players, high handicappers or even weekend hackers! Let's all have a friendly chat here...

markusantonius - 11 Dec 2006 12:32 - 27 of 152

Tizup there on my screen, Cynic! So what more can I say, sir? :o)

fliper - 11 Dec 2006 15:58 - 28 of 152

Played 14 sat and 18 sun , a little wet and cold .

cynic - 11 Dec 2006 16:44 - 29 of 152

it's all appeared now ..... clearly rubbed the magic wick!! ..... now P4 W3 H1 ..... crunch match is on 20th against other strong contender in the flight who plays off 8; as he has already halved 2 matches, a half with him will make me no worse than level with one to play in January.

safety ..... my local course is Temple, a picturesque and typically "English" course between Maidenhead and Henley ..... my other course is at the posh end of the spectrum, even if they allow tossers such as myself to become members

EWRobson - 11 Dec 2006 17:00 - 30 of 152

cynic and I thought Temple was posh given it was the home club of Henry Cotton. Played there in the summer in a charity day: didn't win but won a 150 voucher in the raffle and Mary got a nice pair of new specs. Challenging course: not that long but shots to green are generally very tight. Hate to think what your other course might be!

cynic - 11 Dec 2006 17:50 - 31 of 152

You are right that Temple is quite short but tricky ..... personally, i think it is the greens themselves that are difficult to read ..... anyway, having been until quite recently a "dead men's shoes" club, it has had a recent influx of younger members who play respectably or better, and thank goodness for that ...... subs are still very reasonable at around 1000 (i think!), and nor is the course over-run by societies ...... why don't you join?

EWRobson - 11 Dec 2006 18:58 - 32 of 152

cynic Would if I wasn't too far way: down in nether Kent/East Sussex borders. Not a bad choice for a moneyAM event; nobble the longer hitters like fliper and even test the short game of markus.

cynic - 11 Dec 2006 19:13 - 33 of 152

think i would tend to go for one of Harry Colt's courses for that

markusantonius - 12 Dec 2006 01:07 - 34 of 152

Eric, great players can adapt & improvise accordingly - it's a gift only the chosen few are born with.

safety - 12 Dec 2006 09:22 - 35 of 152

Cynic,
Is it The Temple Golf Club or Temple Artisans Golf Club.

cynic - 12 Dec 2006 09:26 - 36 of 152

It's one and the same ..... Temple is one of the few remaining clubs with an Artisan section

markusantonius - 12 Dec 2006 12:20 - 37 of 152

May have a break from golf now, I think? A tad too cold - even for me!

cynic - 12 Dec 2006 12:22 - 38 of 152

don't be such a wuss! ...... have already "inherited" soul* in his wheelchair so don't need another!

EWRobson - 12 Dec 2006 13:27 - 39 of 152

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Think I'll have a rest first though!

cynic - 12 Dec 2006 13:33 - 40 of 152

well tough couple of days ahead for me ...... golf midday tomorrow at "the course within the housing estate" and a golf memorial day for a now-deceased great pal of mine at the Knole (Sevenoaks) on Thursday ..... God bless mobile phones and connections to the office network from my home PC!

fliper - 12 Dec 2006 16:20 - 41 of 152

It would take some one special to get me on the course midweek in these conditions , ( low handicap attractive female )

cynic - 12 Dec 2006 16:21 - 42 of 152

and of course she would actually want to play with you ..... all in all, an unlikely combination

fliper - 12 Dec 2006 16:24 - 43 of 152

Yes , more chance of goo hitting 18p by xmas !

cynic - 12 Dec 2006 16:43 - 44 of 152

on the other hand, when i was last in S'pore, played with a young lady with looks and talent and conversational skills with humour ....... enjoyed being well thrashed!

fliper - 12 Dec 2006 16:46 - 45 of 152

Yes but , what about the golf !

cynic - 12 Dec 2006 18:57 - 46 of 152

totally irrelevant .... lol!
