PC & MAC CLINIC - On line problem solving. (CPU)

maddoctor - 09 Dec 2004 13:50 - 2720 of 11003

Kayak , intended going to Dell to have a look , device manager does show two monitors

docproc "good experience" , I,m having enough "experience" with the trading

noticed the drivers listed are ms drivers , is this correct?

also just looked at the cd's for the monitors and says on front drivers. Should I have used the cd to install the monitors , very confused

Kayak - 09 Dec 2004 14:03 - 2721 of 11003

lol, they must have sent you the CDs for a reason :-))

They should work if you run them now. Afterwards you could see if the copy on the Dell site is newer.

maddoctor - 09 Dec 2004 14:06 - 2722 of 11003

kayak , maybe , but the "put together chart" said nothing about using the cd's , just connect to computer and fire up!!

maddoctor - 09 Dec 2004 15:12 - 2723 of 11003

kayak ,docproc , optimist - found the drivers and installed and device manager now saying they are there. many thanks
Unfortunately (Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh) the problem remains although it seems to be correcting itself quicker. Maybe this ATI x800 graphics card is not that good for this purpose. and I know I read everything about Matrox but considered myself not good enough for self installation.

Any further thoughts?

Kayak - 09 Dec 2004 15:19 - 2724 of 11003

Check in the same way that the graphics card is named in Device Manager, and download and install the latest drivers (http://www.ati.com). The graphics card you have is well specced and should certainly be able to handle things. Try setting colour resolution to 16-bit unless you do any precise work with photos etc.

Optimist - 09 Dec 2004 15:26 - 2725 of 11003

I agree with Kayak re latest drivers.

How much proccessor power are yo using? Is the problem still there if you disable the other screen?

maddoctor - 09 Dec 2004 15:36 - 2726 of 11003

optimist, problem still there when one screen disabled.

where do I check for processor use?.

at present only running Moneyam and big charts in two windows on extended desktop

Optimist - 09 Dec 2004 15:51 - 2727 of 11003

Maddoctor

You can check the CPU usage by right clicking an empty bit of the task bar and selecting task manager. However as you still have the problem with only one monitor CPU usage will not be the problem.

maddoctor - 09 Dec 2004 15:54 - 2728 of 11003

says cpu useage at 2% ? not overloaded then?

maddoctor - 11 Dec 2004 11:27 - 2729 of 11003

Well chaps have done the following re problem with screen breakup on scrolling:

1. Switched main 20" screen to DVI
2. Downloaded and installed latest ATI driver for graphics card.

changed to 16 bit colour from 32 , made no difference

Dell support replied saying
1. check resolution, done both screens at correct resolution
2. refresh rate , cannot change this from 60hz , no other drop down boxes.
3. Install new graphics driver

so no help there

is there a possibility there is a fault with the graphics card?
NOTE THIS PROBLEM IS ONLY WITH STOCKWATCH IT IS NOT ON ORDINARY PAGES, COULD IT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH JAVA?

any more ideas?

Spaceman - 11 Dec 2004 11:43 - 2730 of 11003

Maddoctor, could you possible take a screen print of the problem and post it here? (I will send you an email address where you can send it if you cant host it anywhere) EDIT I cant send you an address because you dont have yours set ;-)

By the way 60Hz is normal for TFT screens, it would be low for a CDR but its fine for TFT.

Optimist - 11 Dec 2004 11:48 - 2731 of 11003

Maddoctor

You have tried most things so a new graphics card is looming higher up the list. It could be a faulty card or an incompatibility with stockwatch.

One thing you may not have tried is to switch your primary monitor to the other one. Also have you tried swapping the ports that each monitor uses.

BTW have you got the problem toda6y when stockwatch is not changing?

Optimist - 11 Dec 2004 11:54 - 2732 of 11003

I've just seen Spacemans suggestion. Try taking a screenshot when you have the problem and see if it shows in the screenshot.

I will have to find where in the system a screenshot is derived from but it may give an indication of where the problem is.

maddoctor - 11 Dec 2004 13:06 - 2733 of 11003

optimist, changed over monitor ports this morning as changed main screen to DVI , I did this because I read in computer active magazine that if you have a DVI port on a monitor you should use it. And let me say Dell told me to use both screens as analogue which has p*ssed me off. You wonder what you are talking to.

I have checked again today with stockwatch still the same to worse , the worse bit because it is not refreshing

Now the "I wish I knew more bit" how do I take a screen shot and post?.

I can describe the problem , when I bring up stockwatch(during market hours) the data for the first 30 shares are fine , when I then scoll down gaps appear and the little boxes to the left appear misplaced or have bits missing from them. Leaving for a few seconds (when I assume a refresh comes in ) that part of the page I can see reverts to OK. Pressing refresh also clears problem.

also I put stockwatch onto the 15" tft and whilst the problem seems not as bad , it is still there

My neophyte brain says refresh problem but where is it coming from?
Thank you for your suggestions.

Optimist - 11 Dec 2004 13:29 - 2734 of 11003

To capture the entire screen press PrtSc or to capture the active window press Alt/PrtSc. You can then paste it into word or a graphics program. If you want to email or post the image, do the latter and save as a JPEG.

FWIW I agree with you that it's a refresh problem but most people don't seem to have it so it must be something to do with your machine.

Do you use any other streaming programs? Are you using Sun or MS Java?

maddoctor - 11 Dec 2004 13:51 - 2735 of 11003

Optimist, I have not changed anything re java so I assume I'm using msjava but will have a look around.

One thought came to me whilst cleaning house , could Norton Internet Security be causing a problem due to slowing everything down. I have the firewall switched off and am using ms firewall but have had ad blocking on.My local IT boys say Norton internet security should be turned off as its crap and you should install adaware to block ads , any comment?

will take a look at screen shot later , ta.

update , just turned off Norton ad blocking , no effect , problem remains

p.s. where do I look for information on java , help and support is not telling me anything
your patience is appreciated

Optimist - 11 Dec 2004 14:14 - 2736 of 11003

I've never used Norton Internet Security although I do use Norton AV which does tend to hog resourses sometimes but is still IMO a good program. You could try turning Norton off so long as you still have the XP SP2 firewall turned on but I would be surprised if this was the problem.

The more I think about this the more it points to the graphics card. Are you able to borrow a single channel card that you can try out?

maddoctor - 11 Dec 2004 15:39 - 2737 of 11003

Optpmist , I live in the outback of Scotland , it has some drawbacks! that is why I am here on this thread at regular intervals. I have talked to my local IT guys and described the problem but they said they had absolutely no idea as it seems around here I am the only trader and they have never seen the problem. All they recommended was to upgrade the graphics driver which I have done.
Going to try and post screen shot now.

so from above I am unable to get a single outlet graphics card

maddoctor - 11 Dec 2004 16:01 - 2738 of 11003

just tried to post screenshot but failed. Have got it as screenshot.wps in msworks wordprocessor but don,t see how to get it onto the IE explorer clipboard. When trying to save saw no mention of JPEG.

don't have ms word

think I should ask santa for yet another pc :-((((

Optimist - 11 Dec 2004 16:10 - 2739 of 11003

Maddoctor

To save it as a JPEG you need to paste it into something like Paint and to post it on a thread you have to save it to a web based server.
