Optpmist , I live in the outback of Scotland , it has some drawbacks! that is why I am here on this thread at regular intervals. I have talked to my local IT guys and described the problem but they said they had absolutely no idea as it seems around here I am the only trader and they have never seen the problem. All they recommended was to upgrade the graphics driver which I have done.
Going to try and post screen shot now.

so from above I am unable to get a single outlet graphics card

maddoctor - 11 Dec 2004 16:01 - 2738 of 11003

just tried to post screenshot but failed. Have got it as screenshot.wps in msworks wordprocessor but don,t see how to get it onto the IE explorer clipboard. When trying to save saw no mention of JPEG.

don't have ms word

think I should ask santa for yet another pc :-((((

Optimist - 11 Dec 2004 16:10 - 2739 of 11003

Maddoctor

To save it as a JPEG you need to paste it into something like Paint and to post it on a thread you have to save it to a web based server.

maddoctor - 11 Dec 2004 16:17 - 2740 of 11003

optimist, the send signature , an old one , very strange

Seymour Clearly - 11 Dec 2004 18:44 - 2741 of 11003

maddoctor, I have seen the problem you describe on one of my machines using dialup. The stockwatch issue seems to resolve if I scroll up and down away from the area and bring it back into view (I have a very long stockwatch!) or if I let it settle for a few seconds. Just accepted it as part of life's rich (PC) tapestry. If I get a chance over the next few days I'll try band post a screenshot of it myself if I can. Doesn't happen with my fastest machine running Firefox with Sun Java on broadband.

maddoctor - 11 Dec 2004 20:47 - 2742 of 11003

Seymour , well i,m glad somebody has seen the problem as well , have felt like a voice in the wilderness this past few days. Can you put up a screen shot?

maddoctor - 12 Dec 2004 10:21 - 2743 of 11003

optimist , did you get the jpeg file and manage to open it?

qwento - 12 Dec 2004 10:42 - 2744 of 11003

I have had similar problems in the past.

I am not 100% certain, but I seem to remember it was fixed by disabling the 'Use Smooth Scrolling' option within IE Internet Options - Advanced - Browsing.

Optimist - 12 Dec 2004 11:49 - 2745 of 11003

Maddoctor

Yes and No!

I will email you later.

Qwento's idea is most certainly worth trying.

maddoctor - 12 Dec 2004 14:55 - 2746 of 11003

optimist , this inability to open the attachments is really puzzling.
I used photoshop to grab the screen , used save as to save in the format you requested and then used the send facility in photoshop - seems straightforward?
Have you got anything in sp1 or sp2 which is blocking opening.Only one thing springs to mind and that is at the mo only have the 6 week trial version of photoshop , something missing?

On another matter I said that something funny had come up when I sent the message i.e. what appeared to be my old Outlook Express address. When I set up the btbroadband I did not ask it to use Outlook express. What is going on? Since my old wanadoo OE dialup account is still active was photoshop using that? and if so what e-mail address did you see , freeserve or btinternet?
At the end of the month when I lose the dialup will Outlook Express become inactive?.

What kind of account is the btbroadband MAIL , is that using Outlook Express?

In addition when using freeserve/wanadoo Internet Explorer the top bar said "IE supplied by Freeserve" , there is nothing on the BTYahoo header , just says BTYahoo Browser - Is this browser IE.

Until now I have only used dialup from Freeserve and these differences with broadband are puzzling me. If you or anybody else with a moment can answer all these questions I would appreciate it.
and thanks

Re: downloads

Try using a 'Right Click' and then select 'Save Target As".

This should allow the attachment to download to your Desktop. You can open it in the ordinary way with a 'Double click' on the new desktop icon. Obviously, if this works tyou will need to re-save the file elsewhere and then delete the desktop download - or whatever.

For some reason, I now have to do this with .doc, .xls and also PDF downloads and of course, this does include the 'lottery mailer.xls' file from Scrip.

I suspect it is to do with settings following my new SP2 installation a few weeks ago.

maddoctor - 12 Dec 2004 15:04 - 2748 of 11003

Quento , thank god for this board , on stopped stockwatch today , doing what you said , problem has gone , lets see what tomorrow brings :-))))Many many thanks.

Optimist , thanks for your efforts , please see long list of questions above.

Docproc , will see what optimist says , after sending 3 types of file , none of which he could open , I am flaundering again. You are correct with respect to the "good experience" , this past 3 days has certainly sent me around my new computer and whilst the screen fixes , graphics card fixes did not do the trick , the whole thing is now set up as it should be and for that I am very grateful to all those who contributed.
This thread should have been the thread of the year!!! perhaps next year. PB did deserve an award.

Optimist - 12 Dec 2004 15:43 - 2749 of 11003

Maddoctor

Sorry for the delay in replying but well done Quento for sorting you.

I think the main reason that I could not open the attachment was that you had saved it as JPEG2000 which is not yet a popular standard so it is usually best to save as normal JEPEG with a jpg extension. I did try to get a viewer for the file but it still didn't work.

As regards your other points, your email was sent through BTinternet. I'm not sure what email client BTInternet will have installed (if you send me a normal email I can probably tell from that) but if it is not OE then it has added your new account to OE and left it as the deffault mail client.

So far as I know, both BT and Freeserve use Internet Explorer but modify some of the settings and jeadings to suite themselves (not necessarily to suite you).

Somewhere in your Start Menu you will have a shortcut for the original MS Internet Explorer. My advice would be to use that and also set your home page to MoneyAM or something else that you find useful.

Doc

Microsoft have stopped you opening those files directly for security reasons. I'm not sure if you can override them but I wouldn't.

maddoctor - 12 Dec 2004 15:57 - 2750 of 11003

Optimist , could not see a jpg extension in my version of photoshop but did look for it. Extensions are something I know little about.

The reason I asked about OE is because I have gone in to have a look and there is nothing there except a welcome from OE (and how did they do that?)but it was calling me by my old e-mail address on OE with Freeserve. No e-mails are there since firing up BTbroadband. Is BIGBROTHER watching me?.

Thanks for other answers and have a relaxing day - because after 4 days of struggling , thats what I am about to do.

re e-mail client I noted that your 1st address was bt and that is what I am using.

axdpc - 12 Dec 2004 16:32 - 2751 of 11003

Does anyone know from where I can download a copy of TC Active and TC Monitor
Trojan cleaners? Or may be recommendations on other Trojan cleaners - both free and commerical.

Thanks.

Optimist - 12 Dec 2004 16:41 - 2752 of 11003

I don't know about TC but you can get Spybot S&D here http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

7thFloor - 12 Dec 2004 17:03 - 2753 of 11003

maddoctor - are you using BT/Yahoo Broadband? If so, its browser's default mail is normally Yahoo not OE.
Top of your mail page will say BT Yahoo Browser - BT Yahoo Mail.

maddoctor - 12 Dec 2004 23:07 - 2754 of 11003

7th floor , yes btyahoo , thanks for answer , thats what i thought but somehow OE knows i,m here - spooky

hodgins - 13 Dec 2004 00:38 - 2755 of 11003

Don't bother reading below, just don't ever buy product from The Computer Shop, I am 3 failed delivery dates and the lack of a refund later. 13/12/2004
John Hodgins
your confirmation number4UO017AF

I attempted to purchase a new computer at the Taunton branch of The Computer Shop on 31 October 2004 where I was told that it would be delivered to my home within 10 working days and of course it was charged to my credit card bill the next day. I was also given a phone number-08701668814- which is allegedly a customer support number. You ought to be aware that it is impossible to ever get through on this number and on the 10th working day I returned to The Computer Shop at Taunton to check on the progress of my purchase where I was told it would definitely be delivered the next week. Well, it certainly wasn't! A further week later I returned to the Taunton branch again and was told again that it would definitely be delivered next week. Surprise, it was not and I was back in the Taunton branch a week later. As you had now failed 3 delivery dates (although your Taunton manager on 12/12/2004 claims you have not!) I asked for a refund and your Taunton manager went to his computer and told me that yes he had organised a refund for 838.99. He also stated that the computer had now left Lancashire and would be delivered on 29/11/2004 and that when?/if? the computer arrived we were to refuse to sign for delivery. Again, hardly surprisingly it did not arrive and certainly no card was left to suggest otherwise and of course no refund has shown up on my credit card statement in the meantime.
Nearly two weeks later, on December 12th I returned to Taunton The Computer Shop and the service was as arrogant as ever. I was informed that your efforts above do not constitute 3 failed deliveries. I was also informed that a delivery docket for the computer was left at our address on 29/11/2004 and that I was either lying or had lost it. The manager then made a phone call, to whom I am not sure but it appeared that I was correct about the lack of this delivery docket but I was not offered any satisfactory information? I was also given a note from the manager stating that I would be given a refund when the computer was received back at Time H/Q and that notes had been entered onto the customers account. These notes ought to have been entered back on November 26th and it is 2 weeks since the computer may have been in this area. You may perhaps like to give me a valid reason why it takes you that long to move a computer from one end of the country to the other! Finally, I would also like to take issue with the other middle aged (and I am one of them) member of staff in Taunton who stated that he knew little about my case and did not want to know but suggested that I leave their store.
It is totally unacceptable and I want an e-mail reply to *********************

by Friday, December 17th at the latest, stating that you have refunded the money to my credit card.

Yours faithfully

John Hodgins

Seymour Clearly - 13 Dec 2004 01:06 - 2756 of 11003

John, The Computer Shop is Time by another name. I've heard this story so many times from them. Don't touch with the proverbial!!! Might be worth asking for names of the people you deal with and writing them down. Nothing scares someone into taking action more than their name. In case they give you a false name ring the store as sson as you get outside and ask to speak to that person. If it's just a corporate phone number ask for a number direct to the store. Ask for names all the time though. That makes a difference.

BTW just bought my kids a second user (although it looks brand new) IBM e-machine on ebay, 2.8 celeron processor, CD RW, DVD rom, 512 memory XP home with disc and product key, restore discs, keyboard. 180 inc delivery. Bargain :-)
