Saw an interesting web page regarding computers:-

That looks a nice site. I just priced a standard Intel PC at 370 + vat but you could save at least 50 buy buying the (7) components and assembling yourself.

Can anyone please recommend a reasonably-priced sound card for XP Home, so that a Roland keyboard can be plugged in? The intention is also to download software in conjunction with this. (Y'know me...what do I know..)

My PC seems to be running a little slow. I've defragged, disc clean up and do uninstall garbage regularly but I guess junk builds up. Do any of the many so called tune up programmes work? Any of you well informed people care to make a recommendation. I've MS 2000 and 384 ram.

Optimist - 20 Dec 2004 20:18 - 2806 of 11003

Kernow

I would be very wary of tune up programs. Some of them may be OK but others will do little or nothing or worst of all encourage you to change things that you should not touch.

If you want to speed your computer up then adding memory may help although 384 MB is not bad. Keep an eye on your proccessor and memory usage in task manager and see if you can identify anything that is using memory or CPU.

The slowdown could by caused by a virus or trojan so do a virus scan and Spybot S&D both in safe mode.

If you want to make the menus faster Change the value of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\MenuShowDelay from 400 to 50

robber - 20 Dec 2004 20:39 - 2807 of 11003

kernow, in the bad old days of win98 I used to do a complete reformat and install every 6-12 months. It worked wonders at the time and I keep telling myself I should do the same with my 2 yr old XP system. Maybe it time for you to bite the bullet and go down the same route.

Mr Euro - 20 Dec 2004 21:28 - 2811 of 11003

Does anyone want to design me a e-commerce site? I have built a couple of my own but they are far from professional and I am lacking the time to learn correct optimisation techniques.

I need evidence that you know what you are doing or payment upon acceptance.

Anyone interested drop me a line.

Thanks.

kernow - 21 Dec 2004 07:59 - 2812 of 11003

Thanks Optimist and Robber. Prevaricating over the re-install though.

robber - 21 Dec 2004 08:55 - 2813 of 11003

I bet you are :-)

Optimist - 21 Dec 2004 09:20 - 2814 of 11003

Kernow

I'm not sure that a reinstall is the answer but if you do go down that route then buy a new, bigger and faster hard disk, install your new system on that and mount your existing disk as a secondary drive.

That way you will have a faster machine, no loss of dats and keep the old disk for local backups.

The other thing you should be able to do is drop a faster proccessor in.

Optimist - 21 Dec 2004 09:24 - 2815 of 11003

Kernow

The other thing to remember is that if you are installing Win 2K from an old CD then your initial system will not have the up to date patches.

You MUST use an external firewall to connect to the internet at least until you have bought the system up to date.
