Treble, not something I've tried but if you're running 2000 or XP, under Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs there should be a tab Set Program Access and Default. Set option and untick Show This Program to stop IE being shown (it will still be there though).

MightyMicro - 31 Dec 2004 15:12 - 2825 of 11003

Treble:

In Firefox, go Tools . . Options . . . General and see "Default Browser" option.

Does anyone know if USB hubs work OK. I have 3 USB slots on my laptop but could do with 1/2 more. Do USB hubs work OK and can you recommend a make.

Optimist - 02 Jan 2005 20:49 - 2828 of 11003

Jeffmack

They do work but bear in mind that the bandwidth and power supply is split between all of the ports on the hub.

If you have several devices that use power you can get round it by using a powered hub. If you have several high bandwidth devices then put each on a seperate computer port or use an expansion card.

Kayak - 02 Jan 2005 23:59 - 2829 of 11003

For a laptop it's probably worth starting with a mini-hub (basically a multiple socket) because they are so cheap, small and convenient, but as Optimist says you may find you need a powered hub if you run into problems. Plenty on eBay.

Thanks
I believe I only need a mini hub. Its for things like synch cable for XDA and camera

Scussy

Have you swapped the video cables as well, to make sure that it is not your graphics card at fault?

scussy - 03 Jan 2005 13:03 - 2833 of 11003

yes changed,still no good,
there is no power going into the screen, indicater power light does not come on,
power lead bypassed first switch on screen so hopefully a internal fuse,
trying to get into the inside now,

steve

scussy - 03 Jan 2005 15:03 - 2834 of 11003

no internal fuse found,i have a burn on the first conection board which takes the feed to the screen,
now the question is ,do i take it to a repair shop or just bin it as i can get a new screen for about 250,

steve

Optimist - 03 Jan 2005 16:48 - 2835 of 11003

If you can find someone who understands them then it may well be worthwhile. I would be tempted to throw 50 at it or 100 for no repair no fee.

What tools are availabel to partially automate and schedule "browsing"?
(eg. download pages with known ULR's or as results of searching).
And what's the most flexible combinations of scripting/programming/software
to use if I wants to write a tailored solution?

thanks.

Help. I have some files that I am unable to delete. They are supposed to be temp internet files and they look like they are from a session on ebay. They do not respond to anything. I can't delete them or move them or open them. How do I get rid of them?

Thanks.

Optimist - 04 Jan 2005 14:50 - 2838 of 11003

Robb

The normal reason for not being able to delete a file is that it is in use and/or you do not have sufficient user rights to delete them.

You can get round this by restarting the computer in safe mode and logging in as an administrator.

More important, is why are they in use. The reason is probably inocent but be alert for viruses.

Robb - 04 Jan 2005 15:57 - 2839 of 11003

Optimist - thanks. I have now tried that but it doesn't let me drill down to the files I want to delete. In fact it doesn't show the appropriate folders starting about 4 or 5 levels above. Hmmmmmm strange.

Optimist - 04 Jan 2005 16:03 - 2840 of 11003

Robb

Have you set explorer to display hidden & system files?

Which directory are the files in?

Robb - 04 Jan 2005 16:16 - 2841 of 11003

Optimist

They show up when I go and try and delete them in normal set up but when I tried in safe mode I couldn't get to them. They are in a sub directory of documents and settings.

Documents and settings
Rob.Roboffice1
local settings
temp
temp internet files
content ie5
IRGFY5UJ

I found this link which says delete the content ie5 folder in safe mode but of course I can't get to it.

Optimist - 04 Jan 2005 17:07 - 2842 of 11003

Robb

Did you log on as Administrator as I suggested? If you did, that may be the problem. Those sub directories would most likely only be visible to your normal log in.

You could try your normal login in safe mode.

Robb - 05 Jan 2005 10:02 - 2843 of 11003

Optimist

Yes I had logged in as Administrator so Logged in to safe mode with normal login and I was able to locate the files but, alas, not delete them. Was also not able to delete the folders. The message was something like - "Unable to delete, Cannot find the specified file, check file name or path blah blah".

I don't quite understand.

There was a mass of stuff from the specific day when these files were created from ebay and it looks like every other site I visited. I wonder if I had some other hidden problem that caused them to be dumped in there?? There was very little else in the folders. But why would some ebay search files be causing a problem when all of the other ebay temp files (and all the other sites)were easy to delete. I don't get it. This is when I really hate computers!

Thanks for your help.
