If you can find someone who understands them then it may well be worthwhile. I would be tempted to throw 50 at it or 100 for no repair no fee.

What tools are availabel to partially automate and schedule "browsing"?
(eg. download pages with known ULR's or as results of searching).
And what's the most flexible combinations of scripting/programming/software
to use if I wants to write a tailored solution?

thanks.

Help. I have some files that I am unable to delete. They are supposed to be temp internet files and they look like they are from a session on ebay. They do not respond to anything. I can't delete them or move them or open them. How do I get rid of them?

Thanks.

Optimist - 04 Jan 2005 14:50 - 2838 of 11003

Robb

The normal reason for not being able to delete a file is that it is in use and/or you do not have sufficient user rights to delete them.

You can get round this by restarting the computer in safe mode and logging in as an administrator.

More important, is why are they in use. The reason is probably inocent but be alert for viruses.

Robb - 04 Jan 2005 15:57 - 2839 of 11003

Optimist - thanks. I have now tried that but it doesn't let me drill down to the files I want to delete. In fact it doesn't show the appropriate folders starting about 4 or 5 levels above. Hmmmmmm strange.

Have you set explorer to display hidden & system files?

Which directory are the files in?

Robb - 04 Jan 2005 16:16 - 2841 of 11003

Optimist

They show up when I go and try and delete them in normal set up but when I tried in safe mode I couldn't get to them. They are in a sub directory of documents and settings.

Documents and settings
Rob.Roboffice1
local settings
temp
temp internet files
content ie5
IRGFY5UJ

I found this link which says delete the content ie5 folder in safe mode but of course I can't get to it.

Did you log on as Administrator as I suggested? If you did, that may be the problem. Those sub directories would most likely only be visible to your normal log in.

You could try your normal login in safe mode.

Yes I had logged in as Administrator so Logged in to safe mode with normal login and I was able to locate the files but, alas, not delete them. Was also not able to delete the folders. The message was something like - "Unable to delete, Cannot find the specified file, check file name or path blah blah".

I don't quite understand.

There was a mass of stuff from the specific day when these files were created from ebay and it looks like every other site I visited. I wonder if I had some other hidden problem that caused them to be dumped in there?? There was very little else in the folders. But why would some ebay search files be causing a problem when all of the other ebay temp files (and all the other sites)were easy to delete. I don't get it. This is when I really hate computers!

Thanks for your help.

Kayak - 05 Jan 2005 10:21 - 2844 of 11003

Robb, the explanation is probably that your PC crashed in the middle of creating the files. Try doing a Scandisk.

If the files are still there it is safe to delete all of the folders within the Content.IE5 folder if it will let you (they will simply be recreated). You may need administrator access in which case you shouldn't need safe mode, but to see them you may well need to enable Tools/Folder Options/View tab/Show hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer since this setting is on a per user basis.

Optimist - 05 Jan 2005 10:28 - 2845 of 11003

Robb

Three possibilities come to mind.

1. These are some of the history files that Windows likes to keep permanently. These are extremely difficult to get rid of but I'm surprised that it was not possible in safe mode. Make sure that the files are not read only and check the ownership of the files. If you do not own them then you could and take ownership but may need to be an administrator to do this. Programs such as Window Washer are said to delete such files.

2. Another program or virus is locking the files - IMO unlikely in safe mode.

3. You have some disk corruption - Run ChkDsk /f (you need to be an administrator for this.

Robb - 05 Jan 2005 10:50 - 2846 of 11003

Thanks chaps. I'll try your suggestions.

As an aside this is the start of one of the filenames - the others are similar

Kayak - 05 Jan 2005 11:12 - 2847 of 11003

That's just part of a search URL, in this case carp fishing rods :-) Something went wrong and Windows probably put history files in the temp files folder rather than the history folder.

Thanks Kayak. I'll try and sort it later today.

Mr Euro - 05 Jan 2005 20:57 - 2849 of 11003

Evening.

don't know if anyone can help?

a) I am trying to get outlook to work with a hosted email address and I keep getting the following error:

Thanks Opt. Can you send mail too through the site?

Optimist - 05 Jan 2005 21:18 - 2854 of 11003

Mr E

Yes you can but I think the mail has Mail2Web on it. Also, you have to check the send copy to yourself box if you need a copy of it.
