From itvt.com's site this morning.......
YooMedia, Gemstar-TV Guide to Team for Freeview EPG
--YooMedia to Provide Datacasting Services to Gemstar
UK-based interactive TV content and services provider, YooMedia, has signed a multi-year agreement with Gemstar-TV Guide, the dominant provider of EPG's in the US, to deliver the latter's GUIDE Plus+ EPG (designed for use in consumer electronics devices) to set-top boxes, DVR's and integrated digital television sets intended for use with the UK's free-to-air digital terrestrial TV service, Freeview. The deal also calls for YooMedia and Gemstar to collaborate on developing rich-media interactive services, including interactive advertising capabilities, that will be integrated with the GUIDE Plus+ EPG.
Delivery of the EPG, which will be incorporated into devices from multiple manufacturers (note: consumer electronics manufacturers that have licensed Gemstar's EPG to date include Hitachi, JVC, LG/Zenith, LiteOn, Matsushita/Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Thomson, and Toshiba) and which will be free to the end user, will be enabled by YooMedia's new datacasting service. (Note: last month, YooMedia announced that it had signed a partnership agreement with a company called Electra--which is led by a team of ITV veterans that includes the ex-European CTO of Gemstar-TV Guide, Jonathan Drazin, as well as PlayJam and Optimistic Entertainment co-founder, Jasper Smith --to develop a collection of free and premium interactive TV services for the Freeview platform. Content for those applications will also be delivered by YooMedia's datacasting service: according to the company, the technology required to receive the service will be licensed to consumer electronics manufacturers for incorporation into their devices.)
[itvt] recently caught up with YooMedia group managing director, Neil MacDonald, and we asked him about the new service: "YooMedia has for some time had some bandwidth for the Freeview platform and a license to broadcast data on that bandwidth," he explained. "Up until now, we have been using that bandwidth to broadcast the YooPlay games channel on Freeview. We'll continue to do that, but we're now using part of that bandwidth to provide datacasting services to third parties. We have had to get agreement from the UK regulator, Ofcom, and from Crown Castle to use this bandwidth for these datacasting services, which are going to be essential for companies like Electra and Gemstar to take advantage of functionality in the new generation of Freeview boxes that will be emerging. For us," he continued, "it's not just about 'Oh, here's some bandwidth'; it's about working with our partners to determine how we can help package up and broadcast their data for them."
According to MacDonald, YooMedia is currently the only company in the UK in a position to offer such datacasting services: "What we've found is that we're the only people in the UK that 1) have the bandwidth available and are licensed to do this, and 2) that have the technical ability to provide this kind of service," he said. "As a result, everybody has been coming and talking to us. Within the space of two weeks, we've announced two deals for this, so that should send a signal about what's going on here. This is an entirely new line of business for us, but I think it's essential to help the development of more functionality on the Freeview platform, as this creates new interactive real estate on that platform that we can then start to exploit with our commercial services."
ICTV and YooMedia Expand their Partnership to Target the 3G Space
UK-based YooMedia and US-based ICTV say that they are expanding their joint venture agreement to encompass the development and marketing of interactive content solutions and services for the international 3G mobile market. The companies' joint venture, BroadbandTV Group, has already integrated YooMedia's cross-platform interactive media gateway and services with ICTV's flagship HeadendWare platform (note: the latter is designed to overcome the limitations of entry-level set-top boxes and other low-resource devices; it pushes complex, IP-based interactive TV applications to those devices from the headend, and allows the apps to utilize a variety of Internet technologies, including HTML, java script, Java, Windows Media Player, Flash, RealPlayer and Quicktime) for an interactive TV trial that is currently underway with UK cable operator, ntl (see [itvt] Issue 5.68 Part 1). The companies say that, as a result of the expansion of their agreement, BroadbandTV Group is now aiming to provide a "unique enhanced" 3G interactive video gateway for 3G network operators, TV broadcasters, publishers, producers and advertisers.
According to the companies, HeadendWare will enable a content-delivery network that will bring broadband Web delivery techniques and tools--including Flash and Shockwave animation, high-quality streaming audio, and full-motion video--to the 3G space. BroadbandTV Group has already aggregated an array of interactive TV programming for delivery over such a network, through a Content Partner Program, whose members include ITN, MTV Networks, Emap, Turner Broadcasting, Sesame Workshop and UKTV. In addition, YooMedia has mobile content properties of its own, including Dateline Mobile, a mobile phone video dating service. "While 3G represents a large potential market, the diversity of devices and networks and the need to reach across other media underscores the need for a unified solution," ICTV's president and CEO, Jeff Miller, said in a prepared statement. "By combining the power of HeadendWare with YooMedia's innovative applications, BroadbandTV is able to rapidly and cost-effectively deliver rich media services across PC's, mobile devices and advanced digital television."

It looks like the market is starting to wake up and understand what YooMedia are doing.
More articles like the one from itvt help significantly to explain the huge potential
of what will be transforming the industry in 2006 and beyond.
Neil MacDonald on the record said, "YooMedia is currently the only company in
the UK in a position to offer such datacasting services: "What we've found is that
we're the only people in the UK that
1) Have the bandwidth available and are licensed to do this.
2) Have the technical ability to provide this kind of service," he said.
"As a result, everybody has been coming and talking to us. Within the

with our commercial services."
If that's not dynamite I don't know what is!

Hopefully a few more from this..
ACCOUNTANCY giant PricewaterhouseCoopers is close to agreeing a payout of several hundred thousand pounds to see off a lawsuit over the flotation of Yoomedia, the internet gaming firm which owns Dateline.
Shareholders in Yoomedia have fought for nearly three years against PwC, auditor for the internet firm when it floated in March 2000 as e-district.net, raising 15m from a 195p-a-share placing.
The shares collapsed the following year when it emerged the company floated on the basis of fake trading figures compiled by its then chief executive Steve Laitman.
Yoomedia shareholders hired lawyers Edwin Coe to sue PwC with funding from the company's new management under chairman Michael Sinclair. A final settlement is understood to be days away.

The Government is to boost its use of digital television and mobile phones to make its services more accessible and convenient.
In a plan released yesterday by Cabinet Office minister John Huttonwho hours later was named David Blunkett's replacement at the work and pensions departmentevery arm of government will review its use of technology in making services more accessible.
"In 1997, fewer than 16% of households had a mobile phone and fewer than one in ten used the internet. Private companies have been swift to shape their services around people's needs and lifestylesnow public services need to raise their game and offer people the levels of convenience, choice and efficiency they rightly demand," said Hutton.
Under the plan the 130 call centers used by central government departments will be slimmed down as more use is made of web sites and interactive television services.
The strategy is called Transformational Government and is available from www.cio.gov.uk.

This is all very exciting and I particularly like everyone is talking to us about deals. The sp is starting to respond but I hope to see a break through 10p very soon. It's a pity that no revenue figures are given out with the contracts-it's all a bit wait and see. The sp will not shoot up until some financial good news is announced---maybe the directors don't want a big rise yet. it gives me a chance to add a few more I suppose.
