PC & MAC CLINIC - On line problem solving. (CPU)

TOK - you need someone cleverer than me here. These options look to me older than V.120. I was a long term user of BT ISDN2 and HH and I vaguely recall BT droping V.120 about 3yrs ago - thus my original post.

The Other Kevin - 06 Mar 2003 12:58 - 288 of 11003

Trader2 - Many thanks for all that. I too remember something about V120 obsolescence three years ago and I then switched to something else on my machine. It must be still in there somewhere. But what is it? HELP someone, somewhere.....

TOK, when in doubt always start with the manufacturer's site. Try here. I would start by downloading the latest version of the software/drivers.

Would anybody know why my notebook (Dell Inspiron 8100) should suddenly turn itself off for no reason at all? It happens maybe once a fortnight .... always powered from the mains with the battery inserted.

robber - 06 Mar 2003 13:26 - 291 of 11003

Hilary, if it was a PC my first guess would be an overheating problem affecting the CPU, could be the same for a notebook. Does the cooling vent have a clear path?

Kayak - My machine must be from the ark. I've had a look on the Eicon site but they don't appear to offer any downloads for my Diva version 1.6. They start with 2.0 onwards.

Kayak - 06 Mar 2003 13:41 - 293 of 11003

TOK, does any of this help?

The Other Kevin - 06 Mar 2003 13:50 - 294 of 11003

Kayak - Still stuck with problem. Sometimes connects first time but most times it takes two or more goes to get connected. Port disconnected by remote computer or error message 753 are the usual notices.

Kayak - 06 Mar 2003 13:57 - 295 of 11003

I should have your line checked out by BT... I missed that bit in your original post. If you can connect some of the time then it is unlikely to be your PC. Either the authorisation servers are overloaded at BT or there's something wrong with the line.

hilary - 06 Mar 2003 18:06 - 296 of 11003

robber,

Thanks. Yes, there's space around the fan although that corner of the machine is quite warm. I'd presumed that was normal.

DocProc - 06 Mar 2003 19:02 - 297 of 11003

hilary

Make sure your notebook "IN" (side) and "OUT" (back) air vents are not restricted in any way. It is most probably switching itself off as an overheating safety measure.

Seymour Clearly - 07 Mar 2003 00:42 - 298 of 11003

Hilary, I run a Dell laptop and mine gets so warm I prop it up at the back to allow heat from underneath to dissipate. It goes all funny and locks up if it gets too warm. I had to reformat the HD completely recently & reinstall everything and it ran a lot cooler after that ( well, the fan kicked in a lot less). Hope this helps.

Kayak - 07 Mar 2003 07:46 - 299 of 11003

A lot of the heat generated by a laptop will be the disk drive. Defragmenting the drive regularly should help since the disk will have to work less.

robber - 07 Mar 2003 08:41 - 300 of 11003

hilary, looks like we are all agreed then; heats your problem

hilary - 07 Mar 2003 09:41 - 301 of 11003

Thanks guys. I don't really see it as being a major problem because it happens so infrequently ...... it's more frustrating than anything else and I ended up losing something yesterday when it happened, which prompted my question. I'll just try to be a bit more conscious of it from now on.

robber,

I've always had a problem being hot.

:-))

robber - 07 Mar 2003 09:50 - 302 of 11003

H,
So I've heard

;-)

The Other Kevin - 07 Mar 2003 11:06 - 303 of 11003

Kayak - I asked BT to run a line check for me yesterday. Still waiting....

foale - 09 Mar 2003 11:35 - 304 of 11003

Kayak - 09 Mar 2003 12:29 - 305 of 11003

foale, look on the motherboard manufacturer's website. If you find a download, follow the instructions very very carefully or you could wreck your motherboard.

Crocodile - 09 Mar 2003 13:26 - 306 of 11003

The Publisher
The Matrox 550 has independant controls for left and right hand screens on resolution and colour. You should press the auto button on your monitors after you have changed the setting. Also the refresh rate should be set at 60hz for the Samsung TFT's
Call me on 01902 676159 if you need any help
