Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).
Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.
cheers GF.

Stan - I've just checked a couple of pubs on that site and the postings all seem to be 2+ years old?

Yes that's true Skinny but unless we can actually try the place out then that's all we can go by, Big business outfits like Well & Young's (or is it the other way around)? Have plenty of capacity to update the details if they are that interested themselves, and if they want to dispute other peoples comments they can.

True - certainly where I grew up, we had some of the very finest Young's pubs (as previously discussed) and although I haven't been back to many of them for some years, I'm reliably informed that they are largely soulless and sell insipid beer.

Skinny was just going to say REAl Ale here in Yorkshire is a massive growth business.
At least 5 breweries ..............new ones set up and thriving in Huddersfield.
Even have a outdoor festival over a summer weekend promting it.

Cynic,
You could try and resuscitate the Diet thread you previously started.
It seemed to caused to much indigestion, and died its death.

"excuse me, but what does it matter what someone's background or place of education or any of those other nonsense labels which you muppets like to bandy around?"
=-=-==
As you do often, you seem to miss the point.
Many do not object to the existence of Public Schools, Privately run schools, etc, as long as they are not “subsidised” by the “state” and open to reasonable inspection by the “state” on “social conditions” and to “limited degree” on the content of courses.
I can see the “benefits” and the “necessity” for such institutions in certain circumstances and then state “support” seems indicated.
Also, understand the education at many of the Private sector education system has produced a great number of very successful “intellectuals, “entrepreneurs”, “statesmen”, “politicians”, etc. , who have given much to society in their own ways.
What I see is the real problem is that in the present government is not the presence of a few individuals from Eton or other “public schools” in the cabinet, but the overwhelming number of the members of the cabinet and government from one such “institution”.
(Why that is so, is open to questions.)
The government of UK is supposed to be representative of all factions in society, but the present cabal is obviously not so.
Unfortunately, this cabal is divorced from general society by the “fortunes of birth”, and general seclusion from the hoi polloi, during their incarceration in their institutes of “education”.
They tend to relate to its own ”history“, “ideals” of its own ”class” and unfortunately not to the history, “problems” and “expectations” of other groups ins society. They are shallow in understanding.
The problem is that they grow exposed to “narrow culture” and “ideology” and although many may challenge the “common beliefs” , the majority imbibes with a similar fervor as a that of “religious beliefs”.
The above does not necessarily apply to all products of public school and many have been social reformers, and useful members of a developing society.
Often, they have challenged what others around them except as “normal” standards.
The other problem, in that they belong to a “club” they may tend due to “indoctrination” cling together, if, or when, “corruption of one form, or another” is being practiced. (For the good of the group.)
I would not like to be governed by a "royal family".

Its a case of If you stroke my back Ill stroke your back.
This country should be rid of this now. And I for one will go all out to end these privilege offered to snot nose rich kids.

for a variety of reasons, the private education system is changing - evolving is a better word - and certainly for a good number of years, it has been a lot more inclusive and community related than many realise or, in some cases, would like to admit.
it is also a long-standing fact of life, that many people buy or move house to ensure that they fall into the catchment area of good state schools ...... you might not like it, or even claim with some justification, that that is unfair too .... so it is, but then so is life
but of course, for all your blustering, and sometimes good logic even if i don't agree with you, you choose to take the "lazy" option by refusing to vote ...... for obvious reasons, this devalues any argument that you wish to propound

Manuel,
You would appear to devalue my "right" not to vote, if I chose not to.
Would you also like to instruct me what, or whom I should vote for?

"it is also a long-standing fact of life, that many people buy or move house to ensure that they fall into the catchment area of good state schools ...... you might not like it, or even claim with some justification, that that is unfair too .... so it is, but then so is life"
I understand the reasoning and motivations for such actions.
I think it advantages the "few" at the expense of the "majority" and I see the necessity for "evolution" not "revolution" in the the education system.
The latter remark "so is life" is the bedmark of the complacent who benefit from the "status quo".
The same was said of children working underground, slavery, education for the masses etc.

Perhaps, you should remember your place and return to your previous "trade".

fred - life will always be unfair; that is an inescapable fact of life except in Cloud Cuckoo Land ..... inevitably and as in sport, some win and some lose
btw, which do you consider my previous trade?
white slaver?
rag and bone man?
brothel keeper?
restaurateur?
gun runner?
"shipping"?
drug baron?
low-life denizen of brick lane and whitechapel?

Just to butt in here Cynic, but your parents didn't do a particularly good job with you did they? But I appreciate that they probably came from a very difficult time and environment... OK right wingers you can carry on with your insults again now.

It seems to me that cynic's parents did an excellent job with him. He seems to have a pretty balanced set of opinions and uses logic to form views on difficult subjects. He also seems to be pretty mild in putting forward his views.
