Green Shoots?

Gausie - 26 Nov 2008 13:36

A fair few stocks are starting to edge up again - maybe the start of a recovery or maybe they'll be squashed flat when the dead cat bounces on them.

Post any charts here.

Qualifiers are -

recent uptrend (at least one significant higher high and one significant higher low) current price above a rising 50 day MA.

Sir John Major: 'green shoots' of economic recovery are on the way as 'darkest moment' passed

The former prime minister said it would be unwise for a serving minister to tempt fate by announcing the end of the downturn, but that various signs, including the recent fall in unemployment and a rising stock exchange, suggested that the worst was over.

He defended George Osborne, the Chancellor, who he admitted was unpopular with voters, saying this was not surprising given the tough measures which the Government had been forced to take after the last, Labour government left the no money to spare.

During Sir John's premiership, Lord Lamont, who was then the chancellor of the exchequer, was ridiculed when he foresaw the "green shoots of recover" at a time when most of the country was still hurting from the recession which followed Britain's withdrawal from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism 20 years ago today.

Sir John told the BBC's Andrew Marr show: "Since I'm no longer in politics, I can say something that perhaps as a politician I wouldn't.

"Norman Lamont was taken to pieces by commentators for suggesting there were green shoots, but in retrospect, we can see that Norman was right. Recovery begins from the darkest moment.
