hilary

Make sure your notebook "IN" (side) and "OUT" (back) air vents are not restricted in any way. It is most probably switching itself off as an overheating safety measure.

Seymour Clearly - 07 Mar 2003 00:42 - 298 of 11003

Hilary, I run a Dell laptop and mine gets so warm I prop it up at the back to allow heat from underneath to dissipate. It goes all funny and locks up if it gets too warm. I had to reformat the HD completely recently & reinstall everything and it ran a lot cooler after that ( well, the fan kicked in a lot less). Hope this helps.

Kayak - 07 Mar 2003 07:46 - 299 of 11003

A lot of the heat generated by a laptop will be the disk drive. Defragmenting the drive regularly should help since the disk will have to work less.

hilary, looks like we are all agreed then; heats your problem

hilary - 07 Mar 2003 09:41 - 301 of 11003

Thanks guys. I don't really see it as being a major problem because it happens so infrequently ...... it's more frustrating than anything else and I ended up losing something yesterday when it happened, which prompted my question. I'll just try to be a bit more conscious of it from now on.

robber,

I've always had a problem being hot.

:-))

Kayak - 09 Mar 2003 12:29 - 305 of 11003

foale, look on the motherboard manufacturer's website. If you find a download, follow the instructions very very carefully or you could wreck your motherboard.

Crocodile - 09 Mar 2003 13:26 - 306 of 11003

The Publisher
The Matrox 550 has independant controls for left and right hand screens on resolution and colour. You should press the auto button on your monitors after you have changed the setting. Also the refresh rate should be set at 60hz for the Samsung TFT's
Call me on 01902 676159 if you need any help

Foale, Any time glad to help
http://www.giga-byte.com/ but take care as Kayak says.
Somehow I do not feel it is the Gigabyte Motherboard BIOS that is the problem but could be the on on the graphics card?
Anyway there is a utility that allows you to update the BIOS on the Gigabyte site http://www.giga-byte.com/home/qflash.htm
I am glad to see your up and running again!

Interesting development over this weekend regarding my laptop. I always suspected as such, but finally decided to take a detailed look.

My laptop had an ATI graphics card (M6) with 16mB RAM. Have discovered that I can run the laptop TFT and another screen from it along the lines of a dualhead. This is FYI for those who may have a similar graphics card in their laptop.

Request for from a novice playing domain games ;)

Just purchased a group of domain names linked to a business prospect - so went down the 123cheapdomains route. Now I've got the names registered it would be useful to be able to have email directed through using the domain names - nothing fancy at this stage eg. info@xyz.com etc.

I assumed (naiively) that, having ownership of the domain, I should be able to set up simple email accounts at no extra cost - but I don't think I can do this - or can I ?

The idea is that, initially, I will use my Blueyonder web space to develop a token web site - which would have queries re-directed for each of the domain names - and email addresses which, equally, could get routed through a common address.

Any of you IT chaps out there got any ideas - that are reasonably cheap - for a budding entrepreneur ??

I downloaded Spybot but it stopped a lot of adverts(which is good) but actually I can't see some of the adverts on my own home site where I have some banner exchanges. Anyone know how I can turn off the advert blocker?

Mr Wonderful - 19 Mar 2003 19:37 - 313 of 11003

I have reformatted my pc and changed from xp to 2000,all problems i had previously now resolved.
one question

I have no sound and cannot find the volume icon that is usually on the task bar,i have looked in sounds on my control panel but cannot find any reference to it.

can anyone point me in the right direction?

bristolbaz - 19 Mar 2003 19:45 - 314 of 11003

Mr. W.

In control panel --> sounds and audio devices

there is an option to show volume control on task bar

- if that is greyed out it is probable that you do not have either the correct driver installed for your sound card or no driver installed

check in the device manager for your sound card - dev manger is in control panel ---> system --> hardware

Mr Wonderful - 19 Mar 2003 21:22 - 315 of 11003

cheers baz

still cant figure it out i will have to contact a pc company tommorow

thanks again

Limpsfield - 21 Mar 2003 22:38 - 316 of 11003

I have just bought and set up one of these:

Vigor2600_white.jpg

A Vigor 2600w ADSL/ISDN Wireless router

I am using it as an internet gateway over ISDN. The box dials up the Internet for me and I can access the net via a direct ethernet connection to the box or wirelessly to the box.

My question is: I have always accessed the Internet direct from my PC and with Windows XP I've been using its firewall option for all internet connections. Now the router is dialling the connection - it has some sort of firewall built into it. I have activated the XP firewall protection on the Wireless Network Connection (a belkin card) in the Network Connections bit in XP, but am I really protected? Is the router still the weakest link and stuff could get through?
