I wouldn't touch OE after using Yahoo mail. It's excellent. I particularily like the disposeable email feature and the fact that all my mail is stored off-site.

maddoctor - 27 Jan 2005 08:46 - 2972 of 11003

7th floor , can you shed some light on the attachment problem i outlined above? since you are using yahoo mail

7thFloor - 27 Jan 2005 09:09 - 2973 of 11003

maddoctor: The 'Attach Files' works fine on mine so I can only suggest you click the 'Yes' button to make Yahoo your default. It can always be reversed as Optimist says.

If you're on BTYahoo why wouldn't you want it as your default anyway?

Good luck

maddoctor - 27 Jan 2005 09:13 - 2974 of 11003

7th floor , as i have said before with no IT support within 20 miles i am always reluctant to press anything unless i am sure of the result!

7thFloor - 27 Jan 2005 09:18 - 2975 of 11003

maddoctor: In for a penny ........

Seriously, with the expert guys on this thread (not me I hasten to add) you'd be able get your email defaults back to where you began I would imagine.

Another thought : From the file itself (I use MS Word) have you tried using the 'File' - 'Send To' - 'Mail Recipient (As Attachment)' instead of direct from the email?

" .......reluctant to press anything unless i am sure of the result" Are you a barrister? I thought you was Harold Shipman :-)

maddoctor - 27 Jan 2005 09:24 - 2976 of 11003

Spaceman , have looked at alternatives but ssrt want me to send a pile of files and one at a time would not have been suitable

my description of my location might suggest I am in solitary but it only feels like that here in the winter :-)))

"
The organisation that protects the UK's critical national infrastructure has warned users to prepare for the MySpooler worm, which targets weakly-protected Windows servers running MySQL.

The National Infrastructure Security Co-ordination Centre (NISCC) has issued an alert over the MySpooler worm reported yesterday, which threatens Windows servers with weak passwords for root access to MySQL.

NISCC, which was set up to minimise risk to the UK's critical national infrastructure from electronic attacks, posted the warning on its Web site after its Australian counterpart AusCERT alerted users to the worm. It highlighted that the worm's most destructive feature is its potential ability to facilitate massive distributed-denial-of-service attacks.

This is for any other IT pros out there.

A friend of mine is IT manager for a major UK company, he recently has an IT security audit done at the request of his Manager. The Audit came back OK but had a comment that there were to many FTP rules in his Firewall. He was a bit confused by this and asked for an explanation. The auditor reported that he had about 30 rules for FTP in his firewall but that the US branch of his company had only one.

My mate checked the US firewall and the auditor was right it only had one ftp rule, "anyone on the US domain could ftp to anyone else anywhere", my mates 30 were a bit more restrictive.

Comforting to know that IT security audits are now being carried out by monkeys !

Tim: I'd love to know what your mate's firm paid for that security audit. I need to check our rates . . .

Help!! I run XP and recently updated Norton Anti Virus. However I cant receive or send any emails now. I get a little box popping up which says RULES AUTOMATICALLY CREATED FOR THE PROGRAM SYMANTIC USER SESSION. When i disable Norton Firewall email is ok so its something to do with that but i dont know what to do!!!

Spaceman - 30 Jan 2005 17:31 - 2983 of 11003

Mega Bucks, Sorry I cant help with that I suggest you try a google search and see if there is a better source of info, you really need someone who uses that combination. Have you done a thread search here?

Keith thomas, not sure but it may be that your norton security suite firewall has somehow ended up blocking the email ports (probably port 110 for POP and 25 for smtp) have a look and see if they are blocked. I dont use these products so I cant be more precise where ot look.

Need some advice on adding firewire and USB2 to an old PC (only 1GHz running XP Home edition)which has one free PCI slot.

(1) Can both USB 1 and USB 2 co-exist on the same PC?
(2) What are the pros and cons for adding an interface card with both USB2 and
firewire ports?

Thanks

Optimist - 30 Jan 2005 19:01 - 2986 of 11003

I don't see why you can't drop a card into the free PCI slot. If it has both USB2 and Fire wire on the same card then the max speed will be governed by the PCI speed but that will not be a problem.

If you have a crowded PCI bus you could have to manually sort the interupts out but I would not expect problems.

Before you add a card, check your motherboard, it may well have a spare USB connector.

axdpc - 30 Jan 2005 19:11 - 2987 of 11003

Optimist, thanks.

Not too PC-savvy. How do I use spare USB connector to add USB 2 ports?
PC currently has 4 USB 1 (or 1.1) ports.

Optimist - 30 Jan 2005 19:20 - 2988 of 11003

Many motherboards, even as old as yours, have extra USB ports built in but not fitted with a USB socket.

All you need to do is buy the socket which will have a flying lead and plug it into your motherboard.

To check your motherboard use Belarc Advisor to get it's details and then go to the manufacturers site.

Having problems with my printer - I've got a Canon MP360, one of those all purpose scanner / copier / printers. Problem is printing in black. The print is uneven and smudged. Some lines of text are sharper than others, and none of it is really clear. There is a bit of a blank line in the print. I've tried all the print head cleaning options. Have been using compatibles, just replaced with genuine canon ink and prob still exists after two more deep head cleaning options. The colour ink printing is still as sharp as a nail.

I've been onto Canon's website, no info there. Still under warranty.

Any ideas anyone?
