Smaller companies spotlight
Pat Lay's
small caps, This Is Money
17 June 2004

ACH week, former Fleet Street City Editor Patrick Lay keeps This Is Money readers up-to-date with a neglected, but exciting sector of the stock market - smaller companies.

Smart ID

THIS week I took delivery of my second chip-and-Pin credit card; already I am having trouble remembering which pin number goes with which card, and even mixing up the series of numbers.

I raise the point because ID Data, the smart-card systems company, tells me it has won an exclusive contract to design, develop and personalise Citibank chip-and-Pin cards for the UK market. It has also begun production for GE Capital, the UK’s biggest store-card supplier, and has extended its contract with Electronic Data Systems to supply chip cards for the Post Office Card Account.

In a separate announcement it reveals it is taking over CardBASE Technologies, a Dublin-based provider of software for smart cards* to banking, retail and security groups.

Such measures are designed to reduce the risk of fraud. An alternative idea, I could suggest, is one that was operating at petrol stations in Southern Italy which I visited this past week – no credit cards, just put your euros into a machine and the pump will deliver the amount of petrol you have paid for, but only after you have paid.

surely you can change your cards pin number and so make them all the same!As far as putting coins into a machine..........imagine the line of people trying to get coins into said machine after it's been vandelised or like trying to get money in parking meters/phone boxes that haven't been touched!

SH,

If U think people want to carry cash in their pockets instead o cards, then U are going backwards in time. As for remembering numbers u must be going senile.Ar U sure U are not an old granny playing the markets..LOL. Your views on the above are outdated.

Future looks bright for ID Data
It has been a busy week for secure transactions group ID Data. First, the company grew its client base through a contract to make chip-and-pin cards for Citibank. This will bring in up to 3m in new revenues over the initial two years of the deal.

Then, ID extended its contract with Electronic Data Systems to supply chip cards for the Post Office Card Account. This will now run until April 2010, generating additional revenue of 8m. So the group is now benefiting from increased long-term visibility and recurring revenues, and it continues to strengthen its brand within the global banking sector.

ID is also focusing on enhancing its ability to win new customers. To this end, it has agreed to pay 2.28m for CardBase - a developer of smart-card management and prepaid purse solutions to the retail financial services market. To fund the deal, which is subject to shareholder approval, ID plans to issue shares at 7p each. CardBase's institutional shareholders will also buy 770,000 of new shares in ID at 7p each.

Sales at CardBase totalled E2.1m (1.4m) last year, and the group made losses of E1.7m. Its clients include British Airways and ValuCard, Nigeria.

The acquisition will make ID more competitive, and is likely to better equip the company to supply the UK and other governments. Meanwhile, its ability to win new contracts is encouraging as it continues to attack a growing market. Currently trading at 5.75p a share, it looks like there is more upside to come.
