The US Federal Reserve has taken the boldest action since the 1930s, accepting $200bn of housing debt as collateral to prevent an implosion of the mortgage finance industry and head off a full-blown economic crisis.

Good morning traders!

In Asia today, the Nikkei closed up 202.85 points at 12,861.13, while the Hang
Seng ended the morning up 516.92 points at 23,512.27.

New York's main oil contract, light sweet crude for April delivery, traded briefly at
$108.90 a barrel, up 15 cents from its record closing high of $108.75 on Tuesday.
