Prostate Cancer Awareness - Sponsership

amberjane - 26 Mar 2010 15:06

I know many of you know why I disappeared last year but to those I didnt contact, it was because I lost my dad to prostate cancer, and stopped doing many things. I know many of you know about this from your very dear friend & gent, Malcolm Green, (MG) passing away just 3 months before my dad. He helped me a great deal and his family by saying on a thread on here, how shocked they were with the end being so quick. Even armed with this info, I still didnt even think it would happen when I saw him the night before. The phone call early the next morning was still unbelievable but I guess we shut these things out so we dont have to face them.

I felt I wanted to do just a very small thing now Im ready and this Bunny Fun Day came up. Appropriate for me with my hobby, but I am looking for sponsership for the Prostate Cancer Awareness Charity, as if my dad, like so many men, had gone for a check up sooner, he could have been saved. He was 60 and didnt even get to retire. It is trying to get men to go early to the Dr's that is imperative to catch this early enough and although many schemes are running, just this week another friend emailed me to say she had lost her dad just a month ago, same thing, didnt go & he was in his 50's. So a few days ago I entered for the run this week-end and Im hoping for those that know / remember me, if i can get just one more sponser, then I thank Mike for letting me post. I have several sponsers from my female friends, so come on you chaps, this is for you, your dads, your grandads even, YOU and your sons. How to sponser me thru paypal and more detail is on page 16 of my site www.harestonelops.webs.com. or if you still have my number get in touch, Thanks

amberjane - 27 Mar 2010 17:17 - 9 of 20

Ah yes but i wanted a link to where you'd put it?? But hey, somethings working, just got some funds from someone whose name i dont recognise?

amberjane - 29 Mar 2010 23:40 - 10 of 20

Well Ive done it....a rather long story so i wont repeat it on here, you have the link if interested, but absolutely hilarious, I mean who would have expected to see a rabbit actually running in the Bunny Fun Run? think it surprised a few people and we ended up the talk of the event!
It's been rather a long story with my dad's cancer and I was totally embarrassed over his funeral by my family. My dad was cremated and his ashes were to be scattered but because of family fall outs, this has not happened. On my birthday I arrived at my mums house to 'say goodbye' and what ensued that day was heartbreaking. I have not been allowed to see or know where his ashes are and had to find my own way to say goodbye. So this was primarily for him and I think he would have absolutely loved me doing this and having such fun. Events took a funny course deciding to take a rabbit, (well i thought if i was last I could blame him, and we were!!) and I think we will now be in the local paper for the participation of 'Kobi' a blue-eyed white rabbit, which has turned into fantastic local advertising for me. strange old world. Like the good hearted people on here that dontated, a BIG thankyou, that was a surprise in its self. (It's not to late to still donate!!)

If anyone is ever in the position of having to deal with someone with this tragic cancer then please feel free to phone or email me, if you cant find anyone to talk to, doesnt matter that you dont know me, i'll listen if it may help

Good luck and best wishes, A good cause,
May I ask, how old your Dad was when he was diagnosed
and when he died!

amberjane - 15 Apr 2011 23:50 - 13 of 20

hi, he was 57 when he was diagnosed although he knew for a while but thought it was treatable. He was given a year, but then went on a trial which would give him between 2 and 5 years. He managed 3 & half in ok health until the last 6 months. Do you have someone that has been diagnosed?

Balerboy - 16 Apr 2011 22:13 - 14 of 20

Hi amber, good cause and have sent a donation, my wife lost her uncle at Christmas after 6 years of fighting it, he made it to 73 so not a bad life. Good luck.

amberjane - 17 Apr 2011 19:54 - 15 of 20

thanks so much but sorry to hear of your uncle. 6 years was good to keep it at bay. My dad didnt go when he knew there was a problem and it was to late when he went, so....don't hesitate and get it checked out. thanks again

midknight - 18 Apr 2011 11:00 - 16 of 20

Hi AJ and thanks for your reply.

I know people who have this, so I am always interested to learn more.
You might have heard of this book. Really useful and written
in language everyone can understand, as he is not a doctor. I picked
up a 'wirhdrawn' copy at my local library for 20p, Charity shops
sometimes have it for 10p otherwise try Amazon or Alibris, if interested:

The two reviews might help:

Anyway, I think you are doing something really worthwhile.
All the best,

amberjane - 16 May 2011 09:44 - 17 of 20

Morning! After a little nudge I phoned round to see what the totals were. I had my sponsership of 150.00 and profits from the gifts were 75, a little low so i doubled it. a couple of friends that sponsered me last year actually ran instead & one called Kaz that also lost her father last year raised 100. So we had a total of 400 to prostate cancer so very pleased! I am going to continue throughout the year with this sponsership so anything i make on my rabbit gifts will go into a pot. not a great deal at the moment but you never know. Anyone buying a rabbit gets a ' prostate awareness' leaflet in their rabbit mix!!! lol. 2 other girls ran with me and I get their totals soon which is going to breast cancer. my stall money etc of 65.00 went to St Catherines Hospice. A good day out in all although i probably wont do the stall again unless it is outside! Still havnt heard from anyone I used to know on here so looks like I may have to get myself back up to the London meetings or resurrect the bowling nights??? Ah which reminds me... those bowlers Bones, Kevin etc (never could beat me)...where are they?
Thank you for your interest in reading this and Balerboy and Midknights helpful links...
EDIT. my friends raised 300 between them for breast cancer.

Andy - 24 May 2011 13:36 - 18 of 20

Hope the event went OK.

amberjane - 25 May 2011 00:47 - 19 of 20

Hi Andy, yes thanks it was a good day out and very enjoyable with the rabbits taking part.... few articles in local papers etc. Will try and get to london soon for a catch up & thanks for asking, we are over 700 between us now for the 2 charities.

amberjane - 12 Mar 2012 23:47 - 20 of 20

Me again! I know I've been absent again but in June I lost my mum as well now so it's been a hard year. I was like stuck in headlights so to speak so my portfolio got hammered, sweet little old mum, such bad timing. So I know my fundraising is on a small scale compared to some but nevertheless I am doing the Bunny Fun Run again this year on April 1st. It is only a small event but the children love it and I take several rabbits so they can pet/learn about them and Harestonelops has even sponsered the event as well. (probably better to give direct to Prostate Cancer!) but the event is run by the rotary club so sponsership of the event and entry this year go to disabled children so excellant cause as well. I have gathered 13 people to run with me so if anyone is around on that sunday its in Caterham, Surrey. If anyone, for whatever reason, would like to help sponser me/give to Prostate Cancer Research then more details here and thank you www.harestonelops.webs.com
