IT's the year 2013 and the news from Marconi is as follows:
"...B****R this phone isn't working...
(coughs)...We continue to trade and have our Banks and Bondholder interests at heart. Er, and shareholders also, althought for Corporate Polit-speak reasons internally, we call them micro-punters, that is v.small by way of their investment...HO! Ho! We managed to reduce their holding by nearly 1/600...didn't we do well?
Well the last big order we had was from a chap in the Middle east. Hussain I think he said his name was - he wanted a secure phone to operate from his bunker to the CNN press office, a distance of nearly a mile. Of course we could do this quite easily and because of the locusts the string was run through some old rubber tubing . We have miles of the stuff ( well yards actually) it was from Simpsons old lawn-watering scheme. Of course now that's he's gone we only get a postcard, usually from somewhere warm and he's always on about the young ladies that are aboard is yacht. I Don't believe a word of it, he's too close to being a dried prune to attract the youth of today.
The old bugger sold off the turf and installed Astro - so it remains green even when he's away spending that payoff - and I can vouch, that for 2.5 million you get a lot of astro! His palacial home is a bit draughty, by all accounts, how the Mighty live!
Last year we restored the dividend, we chose a figure from the air ( in the private meeting with Bondholders) and after we paid them a special bonus we thought a 1.5% dividend would look sensible without having the air of recklessness. Oh! for those old days after yr 2000 - when money really was like water.
The Middle East order went the way of many of our other orders - we get to deliver and then the customers disapears! Seems this chap has been dead for some time - spooky, or what? The phones were OK I have to say - so long as only one person at a time wanted to speak. We took the precastion of removing the speaking facility from the Press end - so the Ruler chappie can speak without fear of interruption.
...(clears throat)...is this working now....Publicity?
Send the usual about shareholder value and mention a 1-off dividend of 1.5% in the next 9 months, no better make that next year for shareholders on the register..."
Overheard....you read about it here First!
