Clinton Cards (CC.)

philstott - 04 Dec 2003 13:09

Does anyone know why the shares have fallen today despite Christmas coming, past year's increased trading and new stores opened?

ethel - 28 Feb 2005 21:26 - 3 of 63

It's not trendy anymore.Everyone goes on about the big supermarkets competing. Not earthmoving and you can get 3% elsewhere.

Big Al - 28 Feb 2005 21:44 - 4 of 63

Recently broke to new all-time highs and pulled back. Growth predictions not the best for the coming year and less than average yield.

Wouldn't expect fireworks.

optomistic - 28 Feb 2005 21:51 - 5 of 63

Lots more shops selling cards on the High Street at much lower prices, at least there are in my home town, but then again shops in Barnsley have to compete with the Charity and pound shops which are around in great numbers in the town center.

daves dazzlers - 08 Apr 2005 16:09 - 6 of 63

Clinton Cards reported a sharp rise in its full-year profits and is confident of further progress in the coming year although high street trading remains challenging.

The card retailer said adjusted pretax profit for the year ended July 29 was 17 mln stg, versus 6.1 mln stg last year, and net pretax profit more than tripled to 15.1 mln stg from 4.7 mln stg.

'The combination of trading conditions, a focus on controlling costs and improved product margins, together with store rationalisation, was reflected in significantly improved profits,' chairman Don Lewin said in a statement.

The company said adjusted operating profit nearly doubled to 20.9 mln stg from 10.6 mln.

Revenues fell to 460.1 mln stg from 472.3 mln, due to trading from 73 fewer stores, but like-for-like sales for the group rose 3.1 pct, with the Clinton brand increasing sales by 2.8 pct and the Birthdays brand by 4.3 pct.

Trading in both brands has increased on last year but conditions on the high street are still challenging, it said.

The store rationalisation in the Birthdays brand and the margin improvements, resulted in a better performance from Birthdays and a reduced operating loss, Clinton Cards said. The timing of the sale of the 40-plus loss-making stores will affect the performance of the Birthdays brand in the year to July 2008, it added.

The company said it expects further opportunities for the Clinton brand, which enjoyed an excellent year and has a strong position in the high street.

In the nine weeks to Sept 30, it said like-for-like sales in the Birthdays brand grew 4.8 pct and in the Clinton brand by 2.0 pct.

The company set a final dividend of 1.70 pence, taking the total dividend for the year to 2.42 pence, up 38 pct from last year's 1.75 pence.

At 08.23 am, its shares were about 6 pct, or 3.75 pence, higher at 64.00 pence.
