Axis-Shield cautioned that annual profits will miss City forecasts because of ongoing unlicensed competition for one of its diagnostic tests.

Lower than expected growth in certain products in the group's laboratory division has also dented sales, and the group predicted 500,000 shortfall in pretax profits this year.

Shares in the Scotland-based company closed on Thursday at 314p, valuing it at 152m.
