AFX Europe (Focus); Dec 30, 2004
BEIJING (AFX) - A Chinese government spokeswoman shed more light on a previously announced decision about aircraft procurement, suggesting that the impact on big jet manufacturers like Boeing Co and Airbus could be minimal, the Wall Street Journal reported.
"We will not approve any new deliveries of planes for next year," the spokeswoman at the Civil Aviation Administration of China in Beijing was quoted as saying.
But she said that new airplane orders will continue to be signed during 2005 for delivery in 2006 and thereafter. She also said any purchase talks currently underway won't be affected.
The statements follow comments posted Tuesday on the Web site of a CAAC-run newspaper quoting CAAC Director-General Yang Yuanyuan as saying that his bureau wouldn't approve additional transportation aircraft. He said the decision was part of broader efforts to rein in an overheating sector of the economy.
Because aircraft manufacturers typically take more than a year to deliver new aircraft after taking orders for them, the statement that China wouldn't accept additional plane deliveries next year would affect only small numbers of aircraft acquired through short-term leasing agreements, the spokeswoman said.
European aircraft maker Airbus, for example, sells planes but doesn't lease them, so orders in the pipeline for new Airbus jets would appear to be unaffected under the agency's policy, the paper said.
Airbus and Chicago-based rival Boeing are locked in a fierce struggle for sales to China's fast-growing airlines. "The impact is minimal for Airbus and Boeing," analyst Michael Chan of investment bank BOC International in Hong Kong was quoted as saying.
Given that only two days are left in 2004, any Chinese airline that ordered a new airplane today would almost certainly not receive it before 2006, anyway, the paper said. (end)
Plus the previous announcement confirmed that a total of 147 new planes will be put into service next year, enough to meet China's air travel demand in 2005, so it appears to be aimed at specific orders/lease deals that would have delivered additional aircraft during 2005, and existing orders for delivery in 2005 are unaffected. Importantly there is everything still to play for in the growing Chinese market, and it is far from the only Asian market experiencing growth.
Orders for the 7E7 are worth following given that the aircraft will be constructed using at least 50% composite materials -
SEATTLE, Dec. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Continental Airlines today announced major steps in support of the airline's growth, including its plans to purchase ten 7E7 Dreamliner airplanes. The companies signed an agreement calling for delivery of the 7E7-8s beginning in 2009. The 7E7 order is valued at approximately US$1.3 billion at list prices. Boeing and Continental expect to formally complete the agreement early in 2005.

Apparently one of the reasons for the recent rise in interest in Hampsons shares, was a rumour in the market of record sales? Which based on what we know thus far i.e. previous contracts secured and just starting to deliver, is plausible.

Nice timing ;o)
Gives journos a couple of days to get their heads around the Eclipse news and its implications (if they are awake and sober).

I think it's worth showing the whole of Hampson's Dec 10 announcement from a year ago in case anyone missed it and wonders why all the excitement now that test flights last week have gone well:
Eclipse Aviation and Hampson Industries PLC Sign Long-Term Agreement
Hampson Industries PLC secures contract to manufacture empennage assembly for Eclipse 500 jet
ALBUQUERQUE, NM - December 10, 2003 - Eclipse Aviation Corporation, manufacturer of the Eclipse 500 jet, and Hampson Industries PLC, of the United Kingdom, today announced a contract under which Hampson will manufacture the empennage assembly for the revolutionary Eclipse 500 jet. The agreement represents the largest single contract ever awarded to Hampson and reflects Eclipse's commitment to partner with the most capable suppliers worldwide. The contract has an estimated value of USD 380 million.
Under the contract, Hampson's Aerospace Fabrications & Assemblies Division will assemble the complete empennage structure of the aircraft, including component parts and large stretch-formed components. Completed assemblies will be delivered direct to Eclipse Aviation's manufacturing facilities in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on a just-in-time basis. Hampson is currently a principal supplier to leading aerospace manufacturers including Airbus, Boeing and Rolls-Royce PLC.
"We are delighted to be associated with Eclipse and to have the opportunity to play a significant part in the launch of this revolutionary new aircraft," said Kim Ward, Chief Executive of Hampson. "The securing of this contract follows other successful recent new work gains by Hampson and provides us with access to a high profile and very high volume program. We intend to work in very close partnership with Eclipse to ensure the success of the Eclipse 500 program."
Hampson will supply assemblies for pre-production aircraft in 2004, followed by an expected rapid build up in support of Eclipse's production plans from 2006 onwards.
"The Hampson team has demonstrated strong expertise in structural part fabrication and component assembly, proven knowledge of production logistics, and an ability to scale their manufacturing to support our high volume production," said Vern Raburn, president and CEO of Eclipse Aviation. "This contract once again demonstrates Eclipse Aviation's commitment to search globally to find the most qualified partners, who share our vision to change the way people travel and have the capability to support our value proposition."
The Eclipse 500 is a revolutionary new aircraft that will set new standards in jet safety, performance and value. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW610F engines, the aircraft will have accommodation for five passengers plus the pilot and will have a maximum cruise speed of 375 knots. It will cost $950,000 USD.

EADS, maker of Airbus, has come out with very good results and a very bullish forecast for 2005. They particularly mention the military contracts which bodes well for suppliers such as HAMPSON with their recently awarded business.

Keep an eye on this stock if it can break and hold 30 pence. Well placed to surge on the back of an aerospace recovery and the recent defence spending hikes will auger well for them - very bullish on this one.

I agree, the price has held up well despite a total lack of news either from the company or in the media. Assuming the next comments are positive , this share will take off. Still don't know why over 11 million shares traded on one day a week ago.

the new airtanker deal recently announced by the MOD will apparently use a modified version of the Airbus. Given that Hampson already have their foot in the door (via GKN) for work on the military version of the Airbus, this could be good news.

Just passing by and noted what looks like a reversal from recent downtrend (expected it to go south for a time following head & shoulders on the chart) - now we have mm buys, some very large trades (over 75 x nms) and a couple of days of upticks in the price. Investor site visits Tuesday & today. Looking a bit more promising anway .... I bought last Friday.

Just bringing this back to peoples attention, eps is about 7p, but the business has sold off the loss making bits and is focusing on the profitable bits, divi is about 5% too. So am expecting this to rise to 10p+eps so on 12x for this sector, 150'ish. Currently at 77p, looks good to double short-term. Plus divi and other earnings enhancing options could make this attractive for 200p, with 2-3% divi.

As predicted! this thing will motor to 100p, existing pipeline/orders good for 7.5p, new order will push towards 10p, x12 =120, x15=150, new orders =200p, plus divi will be improved, expect 3%, look at the chart?
International aerospace and precision engineering group Hampson Industries has won a contract worth $28m.
The contract, which is for the design and manufacture of precision tools for composite airframe structures, will start to contribute to revenue in the second half of the current financial year.
No additional capital expenditure is required.
Hampson's chief executive, Kim Ward, said: "Despite the previously announced delays in the placing of larger tooling orders by customers in recent months this latest win, combined with the high value of our outstanding pipeline of quotations, reinforces our confidence in the potential for further new tooling work to be released over the coming months as several major new programmes reach design maturity and prepare for production.
