..that GEM that went through was at a significantly higher price than the rest this week...and according to the moneyam competitor the buys/sells for today roughly match which makes me think that the MM's have done some good work today......

The Cupertino, Calif.-based hardware firm Monday unveiled a new entry-level 64-bit laptop called "SPARCLE" running with up to 650 MHz processor speed, 2GB of RAM, 80GB hard drive and weighing less than 7 pounds.

With a starting price of $2,995, the company says the notebook also comes with good battery life, a 15-inch SXGA+ TFT screen, and broad peripheral support. Plus, Tadpole claims its new SPARCLE is the first 64-bit laptop to feature fully integrated 802.11b.

Hoping to seduce Unix developers into taking their projects on the road, Tadpole Computer Monday introduced a new SPARC (scalable processor architecture) notebook at a much lower price than the company's previous 64-bit notebooks.

The "Sparcle" notebook has a starting price of $2,995, and is available through Tadpole's Web site (http://www.tadoplecomputer.com) and certain resellers, it said in a release. It runs Sun Microsystems' Solaris operating system, and comes with a Sun processor at speeds up to 650MHz, up to 2GB of memory, up to an 80GB hard drive, a 15-inch display, and integrated 802.11b wireless Internet connectivity.

The company is hoping that the lower price will convince Unix developers to opt for a mobile development platform, Tadpole CEO Mark Johnston said in an interview in March.

Tadpole's current customers are largely U.S. government agencies and independent software vendors, who pay upwards of $20,000 for Tadpole's older mobile Unix workstations.

But systems running either the Windows or Linux operating system are expected to take over the market for mobile workstations, said Pia Rieppo, an analyst with Gartner, in a recent interview. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) recently released its 64-bit Opteron processor for servers and workstations, and Intel will release a low-power version of its 64-bit Itanium processor later this year. Both chips can run either Linux or a 64-bit version of Windows 2003 Server.

The number of workstations shipped based on RISC (reduced instruction set computing) chips was cut in half from 2000 to 2002, Rieppo said. Most developers are only staying with the platform if they are running legacy applications, or if they have a specific need for 64-bit Unix capability, she said.

Tadpole Unveils Unix Mobile Workstation

Since its managed buyout from its parent company earlier this year, Tadpole Computer Inc. has said it will create two product lines, one in keeping with its high-end and expensive Unix-based laptops.

The second one will house less expensive mobile computers that officials with the Cupertino, Calif., company hope will help expand their customer base.

On Monday, Tadpole came out with the first of these products, a 64-bit Unix mobile workstation called Sparcle. The new device starts at $2,995, half the cost of the company's least expensive notebook, the Sparcbook 5000, which can range in price from $6,000 to almost $12,000. The average price of a Tadpole product until now was in the $25,000 to $30,000 range, officials said.


There will be several models of the laptop, with prices ranging to about $6,000.

"The opportunity here is to leverage the technical piece and get a product out there to the market, and a big step in that is the price," said Mark Johnston, president and CEO of Tadpole.

The notebook, available immediately, is completely binary compatible with Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Sparc chip technology and Solaris operating system. Its high-end version offers up to a 650MHz Sparc IIi chip, 2GB of memory and an 80GB hard drive. It also weighs in at 6.5 pounds and offers up to 3 hours of battery life, according to Edward Crump, director of engineering.

Crump said the machine should not be viewed as simply a notebook, but more as a server with notebook capabilities that can run Java applications and has StarOffice in every system shipped.

There also is a CPU sharing technology that enables users whose CPU is not being fully utilized to run tasks in a background mode via a wireless 802.11b WiFi network, Crump said.

Though Tadpole traditionally works in the Unix space, John Butler, vice president of sales and marketing, said the company will keep an eye on how Intel Corp.'s 64-bit Itanium chip and Advanced Micro Device Inc.'s 64-bit Opteron processor develop, and will consider them in the future.

"The industry has been asking for greater value in an enterprise-class notebook solution that can run 64-bit applications, and only Tadpole has delivered on this," Tadpole president and CEO Mark Johnston said in a statement.

The company says its latest notebooks are ideal for software engineers, field engineers and technical consultants who are telecommuting or working on the road. Tadpole says field sales and support personnel might also benefit from SPARCLE with the ability to conduct demos, training and support at remote locations.

"In the 64-bit technical computing market there is a need for the same portable productivity that users in the PC world enjoy," said Gartner Dataquest Principal Analyst Anthony Kros. "Engineers have a need for notebooks that allow them to telecommute or work on the road using their native development environments, and sales and support staff have a need for notebook solutions that help them demonstrate and administer enterprise-class applications at remote sites".

Tadpole was one of the first Silicon Valley companies to offer 64-bit notebooks and it has a large base of 64-bit portable systems. All of the company's products are also Sun Microsystems SPARC binary compatible, such as its SPARCbook, UltraBookIIi and portable VoyagerIIi server. Prior to the new SPARCLE notebooks, the company's least expensive SPARC-based offering -- the SPARCbook 5000 -- cost about $6,000.

"Based on 20 years of experience in the 64-bit UNIX market, we've developed a notebook computer that gives users the opportunity to experience 64-bit computing on-the-go, at an unprecedented sub-$3,000 price. We're thrilled to be able to deliver the productivity-enhancing benefits of 64-bit computing to our existing customers, and to a whole new breed of users, wherever they're working," Johnston said.

In addition to SPARC-based systems, Tadpole also serves up UNIX notebooks, portable servers and slim form factor rackmount servers.

Once the hardware division of U.K.-based Tadpole Technology, the concern recently completed a management buyout from its former parent.

I must admit to buying a few more too. Seemed to good an opportunity to pass up on since we're so close to breaking resistance that, if we go through, it'll be a long while before we see these prices again. If we don't well, I'm still ahead on balance because I bought in the other day.
