Unfortunately we have needed to restore from a backup everyone's Stockwatch lists, newswatch lists and terminal views.

The backup was from last night (midnight), so any changes that have been made since then will have been reverted.

Actually, just for information, MoneyAM does crash my computer on occasion but I don't consider it to be MoneyAM's fault. As an ex-IT person I know this seems hard to believe so I better explain my particular circumstances:

I really can't live with Sun Java's non-anti-aliased font rendering which makes MoneyAM look so bad on my displays it's like trying to read some kind of streaming 1980s teletext. I believe this is Sun Java's fault because there's little if any anti-aliasing support in the current version of Java - although apparently this will change for the next version. So, whatever the risks I'm using IE6 with the last version of MS Java - which looks a lot nicer.

However, sometimes - though not always - when MoneyAM grinds to a halt the Terminal window freezes to the extent that it can't be closed and Task Manager reports it as a non-responding application. Manually ending the application leads to the usual error boxes but sometimes also causes (Windows) Explorer to crash, leaving XP frozen or largely unusable, and requiring a reboot. I've had this issue on three different computers during the last year so it isn't limited to some oddity on a single machine.

I'm sure it must be down to MS Java because if Sun Java behaved the same way more people would be complaining about it. That said, it's possible some people who are running older or non-updated computers may still be running MS Java so there's the possibility I'm not the only one who might encounter this.

My system's probably only brought down by MoneyAM once a month so given the upside of more easily readable streaming displays I take the risk and bear the costs!

My problem, nothing for MoneyAM to fix - just explaining that no matter how bizarre it may sound, it can be done :-)

Better yet - if you're using Firefox don't uninstall Shockwave Flash - instead download the Flashblock extension which replaces flash with a button which you can then choose to press to play the Flash content if you want to see it.

You wouldn't believe the number of highly annoying adverts (especially those with sound) this removes. Also, because so many sites plaster four or five Flashlets on a page, you'll welcome how much faster a lot of pages load!

mam's a fine site and iv'e no complaints , however it is sometimes a little slow going to stockwatch and back to trades or investors room, i don't have this problem on any other sites, can anyone explain this please,
PS i also have a computor brain like hewittalan.

I too think MAM is one of the best and have no complaints, but I admit to the site sometimes freezing and having to do the old alt/control/delete to come off-line and unfreeze it.
Don't know what causes it and it happens so infrequently it doesn't bother me.
Jimmy, you can't be as bad as me. I was using the DVD drawer as a cup holder for 6 months before someone told me what it really does.

I'm using Firefox and Sun Java on an IBM ThinkPad running Windows XP Pro and nothing whatsover is going wrong when I access MoneyAM.

I demand an explanantion ;-)

MM - so how come nothing whatsoever is going wrong for you when the site keeps going down for everyone else? Can you share the address of the secret backup server with us? :-)

Kyoto: Oops, it went down then for a moment. But, as I realize you know, many perceived problems with a service are often due to problems/difficulties/configuration at the client end. But the service provider doesn't manage the client computer and has no control over it. Within an institution, the client-end computer is incredibly carefully managed for just this reason.

There's another adage, which while not strictly relevant, serves to illustrate the problem: "To the end user, most software problems usually look like hardware problems". It's why Microsoft have got away with 25 years of CTRL+ALT+DEL.

Firefox 1.5.0.1 with Sun Java 1.5.0 on an old-ish MESH PC - never a problem accessing MoneyAM!

I think the "pause" button on my keyboard must be broke.
Whenever I press it, nothing happens.

In my world of computer ignorance, I find this thread very comforting. I have a very similar experience to Kyoto and always assumed I was doing something dopey when the AM screens kept freezing and the programme was apparently 'not responding'.

But, Kyoto, please could you just elaborate a litle bit on post 32? How do I download the Flashblock extension?

I use IE and Firefox, alternating when one freezes I just reboot and use the other one and so on....

I am obliged for the interest, comment and helpful advice. My apologies for any offence caused.

Yes, PC client setups are a mess - how can a Windows app work in over 40 countries and keep falling over only in Thailand? What is is about the Thai version of Windows? That's when I realised I had to get out of IT :-) I really do sympathise with MoneyAM's IT people on the rare occasions I still allow myself to think about things from their point of view. Shudder!

I am using XP pro with firefox. I have stockwatch(x2),Portfolio(x2), Investors,Traders and Barclays all open in tabs and have not seen a blue screen all day.

Priscilla - to download the Flashblock extension in Firefox (version 1.5):

1. Select the Tools menu
2. Choose the Extensions option
3. An Extensions window appears, in the bottom right is a link for Get More Extensions, click this
4. A new Firefox window should appear entitled Firefox Add-ons. In the search box enter Flashblock and change the pull-down menu from Entire Site to Extensions
5. The Flashblock extension is found, click this.
6. The full Flashblock page appears with an Install Now window - click the Install Now link
7. A Software Installation window appears, click the Install Now button when it appears
8. This should have installed Flashblock. You'll need to close all Firefox windows and then restart the application, then Flashblock will be working.

There are lots of other useful extensions for Firefox such as 'XE Currency Convertor' which you can browse through a library of on the Firefox Add-ons site.

By the way, if anyone is using Firefox but finds there are certain sites which work better with IE, I can recommend the 'IE Tab' extension.
