brianboru, tried that a couple of weeks ago and was then told it was not allowed by the administrator or some such thing.I thought 'sod it' it's a home computer for pete's sake. Never had any problems with critical updates before, you'd think microsoft would be able to update their own software so that users could still install critical updates, unless it's just me of course. Are there any other sites where Microsofts critical updates can be downloaded???

Can anyone identify a wireless PCMCIA card that support 802.11g (54g), or even 802.11b, that it (a) currently available, and (b) works with NT4.

I can find a lot of the former, but none of the latter. I'm stuck on NT on my laptop, until my employers get around to updating it - which may well be another couple of years.

Don't really want to leave my wireless router gathering dust for that long, so, any ideas?

brianboru - 26 Oct 2003 04:34 - 34 of 133

Arkwright - Download this 9 meg package -

This update consists of previously released critical updates, for Windows XP, rolled into one convenient package. Installing this item provides you the same results as installing the individual updates.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=D531BF00-D7BE-48E3-ABCC-961602BD72C2&displaylang=en

but you may need to be logged on to XP as administrator (or the first name you used when installing XP) to run these updates I think. That's possibly why you can't run the standard update? XP checks for digital signatures to authenticate drivers.

Can anyone give me an answer to my Question on the 23rd Oct. please?

hrothgar - 26 Oct 2003 10:24 - 36 of 133

Stan,
Surge protectors are identical for Mac or PC, any of the big electrical outlets (Comet, Dixons) should be able to sell you one.

Stan - 26 Oct 2003 10:36 - 37 of 133

Thanks hrothgar, Much appreciated.

Good Morning all.

My wife wants to buy a Laptop and the question is:

Which one is the best value for money?

Her budget is 1100.

Regards

Jeff

Go to any electrical shop for surge protectors they are all very good. PC World, Argos ect

washlander - 28 Oct 2003 10:58 - 41 of 133

Buy a mag like PC Shopper. It will give you idea. It depends entirely what you want the lap top for. If do not want one for gaming, video, graphic or some such you can get very reasonable priced ones.

My wife is a GP so it will be used for medical matters

If that is all you want it for,ie records, spread sheets and the like then there are several relly good deals on the market.

brianboru - 28 Oct 2003 12:10 - 44 of 133

Dell or Compaq come well recommended. I'd go for larger screen and more ram rather than a higher processor speed. Tons of choice for 1100.

PCWorld (Ugh!) Have a nice Compaq for 999 inc or build your own at www.dell.co.uk

any techies out there ??

brianboru - 31 Oct 2003 19:07 - 48 of 133

Click on the help button on ADVFN - then follow the instructions to get streaming working. Streaming uses java so somewhere in there should be your answer.

I've no idea how it happened but I appear to have deleted the Disk-Cleanup program from my PC. And no it's not still in the Recycle Bin. Is there any way I can get it back?????
TIA, Guitarist.
