The United Nations has said the headquarters of its main aid agency in Gaza have been hit by Israeli shelling.
It says civilians are in the building, which is on fire.
Meanwhile the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, has said the death toll in Gaza has reached an "unbearable point".

Two medics working for programmes supported by a UK-based charity give accounts of the difficulties they face because of the conflict in the Gaza Strip. Dr Abu Shaaban is director of the Burns Unit at Gaza's Shifa hospital and Dr Miri Weingarten is director of the Israeli charity Physicians for Human Rights.
The testimonies were obtained by the charity, Christian Aid.

I have been working here for 25 years and I have never seen anything like this before. I have never seen this number of injuries or such severe injuries among civilians, children two and three years old.
We absolutely do not have the capacity to treat the numbers of patients we are receiving. That is why the minute the border opens with Egypt, we try to send the most difficult cases through for treatment and keep the less difficult cases here.
We are asking for the help of all physicians across the world - what type of weapons cause these injuries and how do you deal with them?
It is a disaster here. Entire families are suffering having had their houses collapse on top of them, some of them have been shelled, others are burned, it really is a disaster.
We have been receiving a very high number of patients with a strange burn, completely different to the burns we are used to managing, very deep burns with a very offensive, chemical odour coming from the wound site.
The wound keeps smoking for a long time. When we try to wash it with saline and water, some reaction happens, the skin bubbles and the patient complains of extreme pain.
In some cases there is then severe destruction of the tissue and we have had to amputate whole limbs.
We don't know what type of treatment should be used. The major problem is we don't know the kind of weapon that has been used.
We have a visiting doctor from Norway who thinks it might be white phosphorous but we are not sure. Even if it is, we have no experience of it and do not know how to deal with wounds it has caused.
We are asking for the help of all physicians across the world - what type of weapons cause these injuries and how do you deal with them? Is the chemical odour coming from the wound harmful to the medics?
What are the long term repercussions? We have no idea. What can we say? We try to reassure patients but we do not know.
I haven't slept a minute for the past 36 hours. I am not an administrator, I do not know how long we can continue to treat people in these conditions.
I would work forever with even the bare minimum of supplies. I will work as long as the shelling continues because I have to.

It doesn't change the fact that neither of us know who, in the fog of war, is causing all of these casualties. It will be both sides in my opinion and not as one sided as you seem to believe. I am not claiming anyone is lying or falsifying information but if Gaza is in such a state it is unlikely we will be getting whole truths/facts from any party. I also don't believe it to be beyond comprehension that Hamas could also have access to phosporous weaponry (and yes, use them against their own population - we just do not know and it is unlikey we ever will.

It might help to clarify if they did a poll of the political allegiancies of the injured- hamas or fatah - just a thought!

You cannot beat terrorism if you put civilians first!, This is a hard thing to say, But they will use all they can, to get their own ends, They do not think anything of killing civilians, This is why terrorists have not been defeated up to now. How many of the funny gang seen the mutilation from murder on this scale? Have you met individuals suffering the ongoing misery from the injuries? Think of the damage to the families.

People talk of dysfunctional families. In the Gaza strip they are being produced every day. The psychopathology will be aimed at Israel and America for supporting them for years to come.

I am not a supporter of the Arabs, Palestinians or anti-Semitic, but I can foresee the civilise world becoming once again the latter.

You consider the goings on to be an injustice. History is full to the brim of injustice and always will be - that is human nature. The present day injustice seems to occur more often than not in the middle east - until of course you look at the millions killed in Africa everytime there is a genocide. Africa doesn't get the same press as it is not a developed country 'picking' on an undeveloped counrty but far more lives are lost.

All Hamas has to do is stop the rockets. They've known this since they initially provoked this conflict. It's almost like the damage is self inflicted. They keep poking that tiger with a sharp stick, and then act all surprised and innocent when they inevitably get "mullah"ed.

Gaza is a small area, tightly packet housing, and over populated, there is also the possibility of rockets and heavy machine gunfire coming from civilian areas ...schools....hospitals......it puts the military in a terrible position.....it's a terrible war and I hope that it will end soon and that both parties will see reason !. Hopefully it will all end soon. However, i fear it is just one more battle in a very long war. There is nothing stopping Fred keeping a political blog but he should refrain from getting personal when someone disagrees with him.

I was not placing, you in the "funny gang". I hope that it was fairly obvious from my recent postings about whom I was referring.

This group of like minded individuals seem to believe in shoot the messenger, draw attention from the message, suppress the message, dont look at its factual content.

It is a method of argument.

Many on the thread have responded with counter arguments to mine. Some of the arguments I would and have agreed with.
