Chocky, have you made any changes? new drivers, new programs? There seem to be a lot of causes for this dll to abort. What OS what version of explorer?

chocolat - 22 Mar 2005 09:09 - 3125 of 11003

Where would you like me to start, Spacie? ;)
Ok - explorer vers. 6.0.2800.1106. I updated a while back, and it does mention SP1; Q834707; Q837009; Q889293.
As for programmes - I did uninstall some a few weeks ago in an effort to clear the rubbish plus a couple of new ones.

Spaceman - 22 Mar 2005 09:28 - 3126 of 11003

C, what operating system? XP? when exactly do you get the problem? could you post the exact error message?

Thanks.

chocolat - 22 Mar 2005 09:30 - 3127 of 11003

WIndows ME - I'll just go and see if I've any screenshots saved.

brianboru - 22 Mar 2005 09:42 - 3128 of 11003

Windows ME - Urgh!

This seems to fit

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=235618

failing that a good registry cleaner might help. Better still move on to Win2000 or XP

hilary - 22 Mar 2005 10:00 - 3129 of 11003

I've got 4 machines on a network, 2 on W2k, 1 on XP Pro and 1 on ME. The XP and W2k machines automatically log-in, but the ME machine needs to be manually logged-in even although there is no set user password.

Can the ME machine be changed to automatically log-in and, if so, how?

brianboru - 22 Mar 2005 10:26 - 3130 of 11003

Top Man, brianboru. It works, many thanks.

Spaceman - 22 Mar 2005 10:44 - 3132 of 11003

bb handy link that one...

chocolat - 22 Mar 2005 10:53 - 3133 of 11003

Well, on the plus side I don't have the log-in problem :)
Thanks guys - I've looked at the page, brian, but I can't readily find the errors I've been having, which include kernel and occasionally spool.
No screenshots, Spacie - I'll save some for you next time.
And yes, I know I need a new machine. :S

ARLY BARLEY, have you looked in the instruction manual :-) Normally there's a nice picture of the normal setups. Your box is basically a satellite or cable box if they don't specifically mention a Freeview box in the instructions.

Congrats to you and the wife!

Hi guys

looking for some purchasing advice. I currently have a toshiba laptop (approx 1 yr old) but am looking for an additional system with two screens, that can be networked with the laptop and both be used via a wireless router. the new system needs to be dual screen where the same mouse/keyboard can be used to operate both at the same time.

What do i need to buy to achieve this - do i just need the new machine with 2 screens, the router and a graphics card or is it more complicated than this? Also, any advice as to brand and/or where best to buy from?

TIA

Optimist - 25 Mar 2005 19:03 - 3141 of 11003

Your best bet is to buy a new machine and fit a dual (or more) head graphics card. Mattrox are the most common. You will then be able to run two monitors. It is often possible to add a second graphics card to a standard PC but this can be difficult to set up, a dual one is better.

Get a router with a decent firewall. Some of the cheaper ones only have a NAT firewall which is not really good enough. For the small amount extra, you would do well to get a wireless enabled one but make sure that you set the security on it. Best one that I have seen is the Netgear DG684G.

BTW I use a Tosh laptop and it will run a second monitor as standard.

Opti

thanks for the reply

a couple more questions - is it possible to buy a pc with a multi head graphics card? any recommendations as to what pc i should be looking at - im expecting to go for a P4 (3.4 Ghz) processor with 1024 memory, HDD size not too important, with dvd rewriter and 2 17" tft monitors - anything else i need to consider?

if i were to choose just to add a second monitor to the laptop what do i need to do (apart from buy another screen)

Optimist - 25 Mar 2005 22:25 - 3143 of 11003

Fundamentalist

I can't help you much with a computer supplier as I normally build my own. You may struggle to find an off the shelf system with a dual head card so make sure that you don't spend money on a good graphics card that you will replace. Make sure that you get one with XP Prof.

On my laptop, if I plug a second monitor in it sets it up as a clone of the main display. I can then go into the video settings and enable the second monitor as an extra screen.
