little woman - 11 Dec 2003 16:23 - 3196 of 23498

Xmas shopping? Whats that?

jeffmack - 11 Dec 2003 16:38 - 3197 of 23498

QUESTION.. What sort of life expectancy should you expect from a PC.

I bought a top spec laptop about 20 months ago and I think the hard drive has gone Kaput. Should I get it fixed or get a new PC/Laptop

Its a pain in the arse as I have no data backed up and I will lose about 500 pictures from holidays etc.

little woman - 11 Dec 2003 17:20 - 3198 of 23498

Jeffmack - which make?

jeffmack - 11 Dec 2003 17:52 - 3199 of 23498

Little woman
Its a Toshiba satellite 5100, cost me just over 2,000 20 months ago, been a cracking machine until now.

little woman - 11 Dec 2003 18:13 - 3200 of 23498

Yes - the Toshiba satellite series are very good. (I got a lower spec one earlier this year after getting through 3 different makes of PC in the last 4 years!)

All the techy's I know use them so I'm surprised you are having problems.

Repairs may not be very expensive (just inconvenient)- especially if you go via Toshiba. I have had a few other bits of technology get damaged this year and were surprised as the cost for replacement/fixing. (Went through the makers own repair centre rather than a shop - different type of kit than a PC, but extremely please that I did it in the end)

You may be able to find someone who will copy what you want to keep onto one of those USB thingys (sorry can't remember what they are called, but really usuful for memory storage. mmmmmmm maybe I should get some in case...

hilary - 11 Dec 2003 18:49 - 3201 of 23498

Get yourself a Sinclair Spectrum, Jeff.

:-)

Are you still long HAMP T_i_mbo?

Socrates - 11 Dec 2003 19:24 - 3202 of 23498

Good evening all, sorry but was late home from work. Urgent communication arrived just as I was about to decamp for a well earned long weekend. Well, when safety is concerned you can't take risks can you?

Lots of posts today, almost as many as a Wiggins thread

littlewoman
I believe the thingy you are referring to is a USB Flash Memory. I have one and its great. I bought mine from Ebay, it's a 128Mb job. Once upon a time I would have given my eye teeth for a hard disk that big.

OK, time to eat, I thing, since I'm a bit peckish I'll start with a wheelbarrow full of sherry trifle. After that perhaps a beefburger, but I don't want to overdo it.

This_is_me - 11 Dec 2003 20:38 - 3203 of 23498

Me bought a small HAMPer coming up to the Christmas season before all those nasty maarket boys started charging so much for them! I'm just wondering how well these Hampers keep - possibly for quite a while.

8 Ball - 11 Dec 2003 20:42 - 3204 of 23498

Stockbunny.

I can never do as I am told either, it's a shame when your boss is a control freak.
Hence I never get anywhere...........

hilary - 11 Dec 2003 20:45 - 3205 of 23498

T_i_m,

I said to you during the summer that I felt fundamentally that they were worth 20p and you're there now. The only certainty is that whichever decision you make about selling or holding, it will probably be the wrong decision. That's life.

:-)

Socrates - 11 Dec 2003 21:44 - 3206 of 23498

How jolly, the DOW closed at over 10,000 today. What does this bode for tomorrows market? Answers on the back of a 20 note to Forky, c/o MoneyAM Tea Room.

Good morning Tea Room types, shares starting blue today so let's hope they keep it up. Breakfast is on the go, full English heart attack on a plate.

jeffmack - 12 Dec 2003 08:40 - 3208 of 23498

Socs
Get to work

Socrates - 12 Dec 2003 08:49 - 3209 of 23498

Jeffmack
Shall not! I'm on a well deserved long week-end so I have the opportunity to watch my shares for a change. I usually have to wait till I get home before receiving one big shock at what's transpired during the day. At least today I will have a series of small shocks, not nearly so wearing on the nerves.

Anyway, I work in QA so everyone knows that even if we are staring out of the window we are really working hard on analysing procedures and processes. It can be very exciting!

Golddog - 12 Dec 2003 09:57 - 3210 of 23498

Hello GoldDog,

Moosehead told me to put all 80k on a CEC long, so I'll do that if it's ok with you please.

Shouldn't you be at work Old Socs?

:-)

Golddog - 12 Dec 2003 10:08 - 3212 of 23498
