My mouse wheel with stockwatch now works all by itself!!!!

That's interesting. I have followed the Java link at the top of the stockwatch and this downloads Sun Java V1.5 which is also known as Java 5.

I tried enabling this on my computer but if I click on the Stockwatch, the mousewheel doesn't work. If I first click on the white space around the stockwatch it does.

If you first click on the body of the stockwatch dooes the mousewhheel work?
Have you got Sun Java enabled in Tools/Internet Options - Advanced Tab?

Java enabled in options. Your right in that the wheel does not work on loading stockwatch unless I click first on a white bit. Strange!!

That's exactly the same as mine. If the Stockwatch Java applet has focus, it can't process the mousewheel input.

If you use Microsoft Virtual Machine instead of Sun Java it will work.

I have not checked this out but it says that it is a link to download Microsoft VM http://java-virtual-machine.net/download.html

Downloaded MSJVM from the suggested site and it is still the same. I must click on a white space to activate the mouse wheel. Not sure about MSJVM now that MS has dropped it. May just stick to Sun java

In Internet Explorer, go Tools/Internet options then the Advanced Tab, find the Java (Sun) heading and make sure that the option Use JRE..... is not checked. Close the browser and when you re open you should be using MS VM.

There is nothing wrong with MS VM, they stopped supplying it because of a legal dispute with Sun. Both versions can be installed on the same machine, but IE will use only the Sun JRE is the above b ox is checked.

I recently be plague by viruses on my laptop, and then followed up with blue screens etc..

I appear to clear the system of the viruses and then reloaded 2000, All waswell until I connected to MSN updates. Absolute chaos, M doom virus etc. Blue screens even though I had AV guard reloaded and went to their site for update before assessing MSN. Also had running Troyan blockader.

I have reload etc and switch on an off 1000000000 times etc. Reformated etc.

Loaded 98 which formatted disc FAT 32 system again, as it previously had NTFS Anyway just purchased a router and reformatted the hard disc 2-3 times.

Tried to load w2000 and blue bloo--screen. Blue is not my favourite colour.


But one of the messages I had was "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR" plus a few others.

I am p. off. Thank god for The Cock at Telford which has Real Ale. I have now left this laptop with a friend to get drunk or drowned.

If I could just have a chat with the originator of my problems I might inform him about his ancestry.

When you re-load Win2K, you should boot from the CD and let the setup program delete the existing partitions and reformat the disk. You should choose NTFS file system but as you have had problems, do not accept the quick format option.

If that is what you did, then you could have a memory or other hardware problem. Two things you could try, remove the battery and mains power for a few minutes and load your BIOS deffaults but this should be a last resort unless you understand the BIOS settings.

If you connect an unpatched computer to the internet I would expect it to be attacked before you have a chance to update it, but you should be OK behind a router with at least an NAT firewall.

The other possibility is that your hard drive is on the way out.

If you have access to anotther PC you could mount it on that and test it, you need an adaptor (10 from Maplins). Or you could just buy a new drive. Don't buy from your laptop supplier but get a generic one (around 80 the last time I looked). My only experience is with Toshiba drives (avoid) and Hitachi that seem OK.

fred, I think you probably have something failing in your machine, probably the hard drive. However I would do as Optimist suggests first and completely delete all partitions on the hard disk and reformat it ast NTFS while reinstalling W2K. Then apply all security updates from MS.

I have done the the reformatting etc. Taken it back to 98 reformatted with W2000 as suggested. I checked the hard drive with scan etc. and checked the hardware and checked the Bios.

I have thought of getting another hard disc.

I hope my hardware friend will come up with the solution.

Anybody know anything of these sites. I am a bit anxious about looking around the network at the moments although I have increased my security and in a moment going to hide this machine behind a Router. If I don't reappear you will realise this machine or I have been terminated.

I don't know anything about those sites but would suspect that you had some sort of trojan.

Any viruses that you picked up would be unlikely to survice a reformat but if you connect a new unpatched installation directly to the internet you could be re-infected within seconds regardless of which sites you visited. You shouldbe safe behind a router, providing you don't have any other compromised machines pluged into the same router.

If you still have problems, you could google 'memory test'. There are plenty of utilities that you can download and run from a boot floppy.

Thank you all. Since AM I have been trying to connect up through a router, I have gone grey, haggard, and going bald due to tearing my hair out.

I have been told that I didn't start off being intelligent and now I am convinced that summation of me was right.

Bloody instructions if I had followed them I would have arrived at this point earlier. But the problem is that it is only when you have done the process that the instructions become clear.

Once i thought i new a little about computers, I now realise it was only a little.

I will let you know whether I have dropped the Lap Top and reincarnated it.
