The other possibility is that your hard drive is on the way out.

If you have access to anotther PC you could mount it on that and test it, you need an adaptor (10 from Maplins). Or you could just buy a new drive. Don't buy from your laptop supplier but get a generic one (around 80 the last time I looked). My only experience is with Toshiba drives (avoid) and Hitachi that seem OK.

Spaceman - 24 Apr 2005 00:11 - 3211 of 11003

fred, I think you probably have something failing in your machine, probably the hard drive. However I would do as Optimist suggests first and completely delete all partitions on the hard disk and reformat it ast NTFS while reinstalling W2K. Then apply all security updates from MS.

Fred1new - 24 Apr 2005 12:04 - 3212 of 11003

Thank you.

I have done the the reformatting etc. Taken it back to 98 reformatted with W2000 as suggested. I checked the hard drive with scan etc. and checked the hardware and checked the Bios.

I have thought of getting another hard disc.

I hope my hardware friend will come up with the solution.

When I first tried to reconnect, before all the serious problems started i was directed to a number of pages including WWW.updatepatch.info. www.fixed-pc.com

Plus a number of other sites. WWW.drunken ????

Anybody know anything of these sites. I am a bit anxious about looking around the network at the moments although I have increased my security and in a moment going to hide this machine behind a Router. If I don't reappear you will realise this machine or I have been terminated.

Optimist - 24 Apr 2005 12:39 - 3213 of 11003

Fred

I don't know anything about those sites but would suspect that you had some sort of trojan.

Any viruses that you picked up would be unlikely to survice a reformat but if you connect a new unpatched installation directly to the internet you could be re-infected within seconds regardless of which sites you visited. You shouldbe safe behind a router, providing you don't have any other compromised machines pluged into the same router.

Optimist - 24 Apr 2005 12:40 - 3214 of 11003

Fred

If you still have problems, you could google 'memory test'. There are plenty of utilities that you can download and run from a boot floppy.

Fred1new - 24 Apr 2005 17:17 - 3215 of 11003

Thank you all. Since AM I have been trying to connect up through a router, I have gone grey, haggard, and going bald due to tearing my hair out.

I have been told that I didn't start off being intelligent and now I am convinced that summation of me was right.

Bloody instructions if I had followed them I would have arrived at this point earlier. But the problem is that it is only when you have done the process that the instructions become clear.

Once i thought i new a little about computers, I now realise it was only a little.

I will let you know whether I have dropped the Lap Top and reincarnated it.

Thanks everybody.

Have a nice evening and a prosperous week.

Fred, is it wireless or wired?

Fred1new - 24 Apr 2005 23:22 - 3217 of 11003

It D-link wireless ADSL, but I am connected in at the moment through my Ethernet card, when or if I get my LapTop back I will use the wireless contraption. (Almost said contraception, that is what this computer is beginning to resemble.)

Optimist - 24 Apr 2005 23:41 - 3218 of 11003

Fred

I know that most D-Link stuff is fairly standard. If you post the model number I will look up the manual and try to talk you through it.

How kind of guys are on this post.

paul1812 - 26 Apr 2005 10:40 - 3220 of 11003

I use MS Outlook for my E_mails and I am having trouble viewing attachments. When I click to open the attachment it tells me that the application can not be found. How do I set up MS Outlook to open these attachments?

I can veiw the attachment if I save the file first.

Your help would be appreciated

Paul

Optimist - 26 Apr 2005 11:27 - 3221 of 11003

Paul

My guess would be that it is something to do with MS security settings some of which are difficult if not impossible to override.

What version of Outlook are you using and which Office service packs are installed?

Edit
Do you have the problem with all or just some types of attachment?

brianboru - 26 Apr 2005 12:02 - 3222 of 11003

Cannot open attachments in Microsoft Outlook

SUMMARY
Microsoft Outlook includes a feature that blocks attachments that are considered unsafe. If you receive an e-mail message that contains an attachment that contains one of the file types that are considered unsafe, you may receive the following message:
Outlook blocked access to the following potentially unsafe attachments: [...]
Although Outlook blocks access to the attachment, the attachment still exists in the e-mail message.

This article discusses the methods to use if you have to open an attachment that has been blocked in Outlook.

Hope that helps ;-)

paul1812, this sounds more like a badly installed application since it is looking for the application but not finding it. What extension are you trying to open and what application comes up by clicking on the name? Suggest you reinstall it. Otherwise you might be able to change the registry information if you know how.

paul1812 - 26 Apr 2005 12:28 - 3224 of 11003

Optimist, Brianboru and Kyak Many thanks for you prompt reply. Reinstalled my photo aplications and all is well

Thanks

Paul

Just about to buy some new hardware. However some of the customised software we presently use we will still need to use for the next 8-10 weeks or so will be DOS based. Can this run under windows XP pro?

edit, now having a look in Gopogle and I see there could be a problem. Hmm, will have to try on my XP PC at home.

brianboru - 27 Apr 2005 10:05 - 3227 of 11003

Seymour - I moved datafile (like sage?) which is dos based onto xp pro with no problems - however I did have to upgrade my Lloyds Link.

I think your project managr should really try one and see!

Seymour Clearly - 27 Apr 2005 10:07 - 3228 of 11003

That means me. Thanks Brian. This is an old system called Optisoft which no-one will have heard of and is no longer supported - hence the move to new software and machines.

Optimist - 27 Apr 2005 10:29 - 3229 of 11003

SC

Most DOS software will run OK but you may need to do a little tweaking of the settings.

Right click on the shortcut to your DOS program, click properties and then goto the Compatibility Tab.
