Choc/hilary, these are just the latest fad in virus emails, nothing to do with you. They are made to look a bit (not much) like messages from a mail server to tempt you to open the attachment. As you suspected hilary this would not have been advisable.

The new Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware* (Beta) has been getting good reviews.
eg: came top in last month's PC Answers spyware products review.
Free by download from
http://www.microsoft.com
*(previously from Giant Software but now owned and developed by MS)
It doesn't, however, currently repair CoolWebSearch malware variants (for which CWShredder (free) or SpySubtract Pro 2.6 (a fuller Intermute product including CWShredder, 16) or manual removal following eg Symantec instructions, might still be required.)

Cheers K - I was hoping it was as simple as that. At least I could report the MSN ones, whether or not it works is another matter of course - I never touch anything in my junk box...even the advfn stuff ;) And you're right of course, Optimist - I won't be sure of much until I've run a proper virus check.
Speaking of Symantec, I received an odd email with their sender name in the junk a while back - didn't open that either.

Kayak, thanks for trying to help re rogue e-mail.
Clicking View/Layout and then unticking Show Preview pane/ok, then right click delete certainly highlighted the offender in blue and got the computer groaning but didn't delete it. It jammed up the page and everything else rather than send it to non responding mode.
Turning on again Show Preview pane doesn't stay unticked?

hodgins, did you try leaving it for a while (1/2 hour) once it went into groan mode, it could just be trying to work its way through the job. Sometimes OE does take ages to do stuff.
Show preview pane should stay unticked, perhaps just because you didn't shut down properly.

hodgkins, you could try starting task manager and clicking the process tab and then clicking the CPU heading on that tab, that will put processes using a lot of CPU at the top of the list. Then open OE and do the think that K mentioned and watch what affect it has on cpu activity as K mentioned leave it running for some time.

HELP!!!!!
Well, I am doing well with Outlook Express-not!, previous problem not yet solved as haven't had spare half hour to let it groan but will follow above advice.
But, new, bigger problem. NO e-mails will delete, was busily deleting and then suddenly nothing will delete (not sure of which one last deleted), not from top or right click/properties. Top delete button some of the time grey and dead, and some of the time red, looks active but inactive? Won't delete anything Show Preview Pane on or off!
Might letting it groan for half an hour solve all?
Is it worth uninstalling/reinstalling Outlook Express. Another user on this computers Outlook Express functions normally?

hodgins, I would let it groan, but see as Spaceman says in post 3277 whether it is using CPU. If it is, let it run. If it isn't, it probably won't matter if you wait.
The final solution is to delete your whole inbox... Tools/Options/Maintenance tab, click Store Folder, go to that folder in Windows Explorer and delete the file (after shutting down Outlook Express). Of course that will delete all your other messages too. The Inbox will be recreated automatically when you restart OE.

Hodgkins, if the things mentioned dont work this is starting to look like a corrupted mailstore, Kayaks solution is the only one I know for OE (which I dont use!).
I would also make sure you do a very thorough check for virus and Trojan infections.
Good luck.

Hi all, sorry for being a bit thick but after following Kayak 3283 I could not find it in Windows Explorer???
Also re Spaceman 3277, not quite sure how to access Task manager, but I presume this is diagnostic rather than fix it?
Got to go out but maybe "Outlook Express repair" from microsoft?????

Task Manager: right click on an empty spot on the taskbar, select Task Manager, select Processes tab, look for a process called 'msimn' and check CPU column (it's a percentage).
The Store Folder option will give you the full folder name of the message store. It may be longer than the display width of the box. In Windows Explorer take each bit between the slashes and go down, starting at C:/ or whatever your disk is called (not at Desktop).

Oh boy- I can now only get Outlook Express open by pressing Start/run, then typing in msimn.exe/OK
So, in other words, all normal icons have disappeared, can I get them back?
Kayak, after typing Tools/Options/Maintenance/Store Folder
I get Your personal message store is located in the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Johnny\Local Settings\Application Data
but still can't find this in Windows Explorer
