hodgkins, you could try starting task manager and clicking the process tab and then clicking the CPU heading on that tab, that will put processes using a lot of CPU at the top of the list. Then open OE and do the think that K mentioned and watch what affect it has on cpu activity as K mentioned leave it running for some time.

Optimist - 10 May 2005 18:23 - 3279 of 11003

Have you tried right clicking on the email and selecting properties? This might give you some clue as to what the problem is.

Spaceman - 10 May 2005 18:44 - 3280 of 11003

O see 3259 ;-)

HELP!!!!!
Well, I am doing well with Outlook Express-not!, previous problem not yet solved as haven't had spare half hour to let it groan but will follow above advice.

But, new, bigger problem. NO e-mails will delete, was busily deleting and then suddenly nothing will delete (not sure of which one last deleted), not from top or right click/properties. Top delete button some of the time grey and dead, and some of the time red, looks active but inactive? Won't delete anything Show Preview Pane on or off!

Might letting it groan for half an hour solve all?

Is it worth uninstalling/reinstalling Outlook Express. Another user on this computers Outlook Express functions normally?

DocProc - 10 May 2005 19:51 - 3283 of 11003

hodgins

I found the following
Why does OE block downloading of pictures after SP2?
and also
Why can't I open attachments in OE6?

Kayak - 10 May 2005 20:23 - 3284 of 11003

hodgins, I would let it groan, but see as Spaceman says in post 3277 whether it is using CPU. If it is, let it run. If it isn't, it probably won't matter if you wait.

The final solution is to delete your whole inbox... Tools/Options/Maintenance tab, click Store Folder, go to that folder in Windows Explorer and delete the file (after shutting down Outlook Express). Of course that will delete all your other messages too. The Inbox will be recreated automatically when you restart OE.

Spaceman - 10 May 2005 21:09 - 3285 of 11003

Hodgkins, if the things mentioned dont work this is starting to look like a corrupted mailstore, Kayaks solution is the only one I know for OE (which I dont use!).

I would also make sure you do a very thorough check for virus and Trojan infections.

Good luck.

Optimist - 10 May 2005 21:10 - 3286 of 11003

If you delete the whole inbox, try to export individual folders first. You should then be able to import them into your new inbox.

hodgins - 11 May 2005 18:55 - 3287 of 11003

Hi all, sorry for being a bit thick but after following Kayak 3283 I could not find it in Windows Explorer???
Also re Spaceman 3277, not quite sure how to access Task manager, but I presume this is diagnostic rather than fix it?
Got to go out but maybe "Outlook Express repair" from microsoft?????

Kayak - 11 May 2005 19:37 - 3288 of 11003

Task Manager: right click on an empty spot on the taskbar, select Task Manager, select Processes tab, look for a process called 'msimn' and check CPU column (it's a percentage).

The Store Folder option will give you the full folder name of the message store. It may be longer than the display width of the box. In Windows Explorer take each bit between the slashes and go down, starting at C:/ or whatever your disk is called (not at Desktop).

hodgins - 11 May 2005 22:37 - 3289 of 11003

Oh boy- I can now only get Outlook Express open by pressing Start/run, then typing in msimn.exe/OK
So, in other words, all normal icons have disappeared, can I get them back?

Kayak, after typing Tools/Options/Maintenance/Store Folder
I get Your personal message store is located in the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Johnny\Local Settings\Application Data

but still can't find this in Windows Explorer

hodgins - 11 May 2005 22:39 - 3290 of 11003

CPU read 0, can i post you a beer?

Spaceman - 11 May 2005 22:48 - 3291 of 11003

hodgins, have you checked for virus/trojans? also I suggest that you urgently check that your hard disk is not full and that your hard disk does not have serious errors. Has it been making odd noises recently? it could be about to fail.

good luck.

Kayak - 11 May 2005 22:53 - 3292 of 11003

hodgins, there is more text to the right of what you have posted. You will have to click on the field and move the cursor to the right to see it.

hodgins - 11 May 2005 23:26 - 3293 of 11003

Thanks! Clean inbox, offenders deleted and deleting again.
Only 1 problem left. Since, I spoke to ISP provider earlier in the day all Outlook Express icons gone.
I can open Outlook Express by clicking Start/run, typing msimn.exe/OK
but icons gone from Start/Desktop/Quick Start

I will happily go to bed if i can get these back.

Kayak - 11 May 2005 23:31 - 3294 of 11003

You might have an icon left in Start/Programs which you can copy elsewhere (ctrl-drag), otherwise go to c:\program files\outlook express, right click on msimn.exe and select Create Shortcut. It will place it in the same folder and you can then drag it or copy (ctrl-drag) it to the Start Menus, desktop or quick start as you wish.

Thank you!

Mega Bucks - 22 May 2005 10:56 - 3296 of 11003

Morning all you PC Wizards,

Just about to buy a GPRS Data card from Ebuyer for me laptop, will this have a effect on my wifi or what ??? All i need is some form of email connection whilst on the move !!! Me thinks this is easier than hooking it up to my mobile...

Any help or suggestions would be welcome :-)

Mega...

Optimist - 22 May 2005 11:30 - 3297 of 11003

MB

The GPRS card will apear as a seperate network connection, it will not affect your WiFi but you will have to manually dissable when you do not want to use it and you may have to tell your email client to use that connection

If you have a GPRS phone with Bluetooth on the phone and laptop then it is just as easy to use and doesn't require a second mobile account. I connect via my mobile without even touching the phone. The initial setup, like everything to do with connecting computers to phones, was not easy but it only had to be done once.

One thing to remember when using GPRS is to dissable Windows and AV automatic updates. Otherwise you suddenly find that you have downloaded another couple of MB of data. You may also want to set you email client to only download the headers.
